Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Tom:
I am in agreement with you as I look back over my previous steps. I believe in setting up the Operation I went back to my tables and sets and selected the wrong one (the two sets had similar names).

Your input is most appreciated, as always.

    Re: Operation on Selected Records

Pete, in order to use the "currently selected records" option with a saved operation you have to base the operation on the same table or set that was used to "select" the records. I'm guessing you based the form on one set, and the operation on a different one, at least initially. Anyway I'm glad it's working now. -- tom

    Re: Operation on Selected Records

I hope I didn't mess up your computer. Sorry about that, as the same happened on this side. I went back to an earlier zip, made the changes and now I am finding that I, indeed, do need to select "Current Records" radio button to get the right selection of records. So, maybe it was some corruption that caused all of this, but I thought I was being careful and did lots of compacted backups. So this should be a clean database with the date running correctly and the exporting running correctly.

Thanks again for your interest. Now if I could figure out how to get a really nice HTML page of results, I could just stay with Alpha...:) I owe you a nice freshly picked Empire apple from the state of Massachusetts.

Something still wrong with your sample. Cannot compact it after unzipping. Looks corrupted. Will await a clean sample. -- tom

    Tom:
Sorry. In my rush to get this out, I was playing around with the date button and did not get that right. I believe it now is working properly. When I push the Export button after selecting a date I get the error message. The steps are:
    1. Click on Date button and select Sept 16.
    2. Click on Export button and the error comes about

I created the export procedure using the Operation Genie, saved it as NewExport. When I did that, the operation worked for exporting all the records. When I checked off "Use Currently selected records" the error message came about.

I hope this makes it clearer.

Note: Well, wonders never seek to amaze me. I went back after writing this, changed the selection to none and lo and behold, the export process worked correctly. It is my reading comprehension that needs work, as the genie specifically states to make selections in ADDITION to what was originally made. So, the solution was simple. Thanks for looking and getting me to stay on this project.

Select a Date button on the Result List Form doesn't work. Is this what's broken on your end, too, or is this something that's gotten broken in the process of posting the sample?

Pete, you're going to have to explain the sequence you need and where it's breaking down. The form that's used to select the date and export the records is based on a different set than the export operation you're trying to run. This means the query you run against the current form will have zero effect on the export operation. What am I missing?

I've been poking and prodding but so far haven't see the error message you reported at the top of this thread.

Please take a couple of minutes and spell out (spare no details, use actual field, form, index, set, and operation names) what you're trying to do.

Here is the database as requested. It should open to Meet Results. Click on the black button and that takes you to the list page for exporting. The Date Button and Export Button is what I am having difficulty with.

    Thanks for your help.

    Tom:
Thanks for the offer. I will clean it up a bit, reduce the number of entries and send it along later today or early tomorrow. It is a simple database to enter cross country results for the local high school conference. I then post the results on my web page in a timely manner for all the kids in the conference to view so they know what everyone else is doing. I am doing this for free, so no fancy stuff other than $6.00 a month for the web site...:). I don't like how Alpha creates html, as I stated earlier, so I export the Alpha data back to my old flatfile database to do the html and then post up to the site. This is the end result:
    http://mansfieldtrack.com/HockXC/hoc...BoysWeek1.html
As meets continue through the season, I only want to list results from a specific meet, not all of the meets I have entered into the database.

    Hi Pete,

Instead of using the filter of "Currently selected records", select the records you want to export the same way that you are selecting a specific date using a query that finds the 136 records.

    Tell us what happens then.

Post a sample database with instructions for us to follow to see what you're doing and what's failing. Will be glad to take a good look to see if I can explain what's happening.

Pete, I gave you bad information earlier. I see now that the built in export operation can handle one to many sets just fine, and exports the composite records one would expect. I had forgotten this and should have checked before telling you one had to do exports one table at a time. Sorry.

Will still take a look at your sample if you wish.

    Re: Operation on Selected Records

    Tom:
It is from a set, not a single table. I guess I just don't understand, because I can certainly export the entire set of records, no problem. Instead, I would like to only select those records I have preselected (records having one particular date). So, this seems quite confusing to me. This is now two strikes against me, as I am exporting to another database that is able to generate html very nicely without the hangups that Alpha seems to have. I could easily also separate the data once I have it in the other database, but I wanted to avoid that and just work with selected data I initially input into Alpha.

If I go to the default browse for the set, If I try to export only from one file using the selected records from a query, it says it selects those records, but then doesn't export them. If I do the same thing using fields from two files in the set, the prompt says it selects all the records, despite my selecting selected records and then exports those fields as a text file.

I am going to continue playing with this, but I must not be understanding some concrete principals of relational database rules.

Thanks for your thoughts. At least the apple picking was a good day (65 degrees, sunny and plenty of apples).

Are you trying to export records from a table, or from a set of tables? I believe the export operation will only work on one table at a time.

When you query a set of tables you are not "selecting a subset of a file". You're selecting subsets from multiple tables. A very different thing. A set is not a file.

started a topic Operation on Selected Records

    Operation on Selected Records

Since I am working in V9, I thought I would go here rather than stay in V8, where a similar question was posted by Gail.
In detail. I have a set of records that have a date field. I select a specific date using a query that finds 136 records out of a total of 292.
I then want to export those 136 as a text file and use the Export operation available under Tools. I select where I want the text file to go and then I am prompted to select "no additional selection criteria" etc.
    I select "Currently selected records".

I get the following error as shown by my jpg. There is got to be something wrong with how Alpha is doing this, because there isn't any code that I am inputing myself, this is all done by the Genie.

Any indexes are also Alpha generated, so I have done nothing in that area, if that matters.

This seems as if it should be a simple task, Select a subset of a file, export that selected group of records. Job done. Instead I am spending hours trying to figure out how and why this is not working properly.

Has anyone else run into this, as I would like to post this as a bug, if, indeed it is one. I haven't tried it on Alpha Sports yet, but I am going apple picking for a few hours first to calm down...:)
Working...
