Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    What comes after version 9?

Can somebody let me have a view on where Alpha is going with new releases?

I bought V8 just before V9 came out, and it would have been easier to wait a couple of weeks to get V9.

Given the "special offers" around at the moment, I wonder what is likey to come out next (V10 Diamond ) and whether it would be better to wait a while longer?

I need to make a decision on behalf of a client over the next 2 weeks.

Any views would be welcome (Selwyn).

Ted, you're not serious are you? Why would Alpha (or any other software publisher for that matter) do this? -- tom

I used to work for a company back in the 80's and they leaked out to their sale people that they were working on a replacement computer system and over half of the company's orders were canceled. After about a 9 months of delays and no new orders for the current system the company almost went bankrupt before the new product hit the market. Even after several years of sales they never really recovered from the sales leak and finally had to close their doors.

        Ted,

Alpha came out very quickly w. v9. I think it was about a year after v8. I'm sure they're working really hard on v10. But, I bet it's still a ways off. It certainly won't be out in the next two weeks, or even two months. But, then again, what do I know?

That's weird. Why would customers cancel orders because they hear a new system is coming on line? Usually that only happens after a new system fails.

Peter, The company was selling computer systems to customers in a vertical specific market. The new computer system was going to be so much better and have customizable software that most of the customers wanted to wait for the new system and canceled their $25,000 to $50,00 orders to wait for the new system.

              Hi All,

My guess is V10 sometime in 2010.

Confusious he says: There is no point in waiting for the next bus if you need to travel today.

It will run on Linux, Unix, Mac OS, ipods, XP, VISTA, all old versions of windows & Microsoft new operating system. Version 10.4 will also be embedded in Chrome. I shot a 84 yesterday with 5 lip out birdie puts. It should have been a 79.

                  Tony,

If they re-wrote the entire product in Java then it could be possible to run on Linux, unix, mac OS and windows but I do not see that happening:(.

Since they gave ample notification that V9 was coming out for several months before its release, and offered full compensation for customers purchasing just before then, to allow them to upgrade at a very low price, I don't see the problem here...

                      Wow!
                      Didn't expect such a response!
                      Thank you all.

I've followed and worked with Alpha since the early 90's so I'm an alphaholic, (but the only certificate I have is one to say that I am sane.:p)

I got the free upgrade to V7 from V6, so I'm happy that I'm not going to be left dangling. As for buying V8, there was no offer for an upgrade to V9.

Aaron has been extreemly helpful, as always, so I'll be going for V9 with the unlimited Run Engine option.
