Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    refreshing objects

    I have seen some posts with similar questions to mine, but no answers.
    I have a form (let's call it form A) with an embedded browse listing all my inventory in short form. On the same form are several fields with expanded data from the inventory items, such as images of the item. As I move between rows of the embedded browse, the expanded data changes to reflect the item I have selected on the embedded browse. So far so good.
    Then I have an "onRowDblclick" action on the embedded browse that calls a popup form (form B) which expands the inventory item even further, allowing you to either view or edit the data associated with the item. Form A stays open but is covered up by form B. Form B comes up OK, allows you to edit the data. Form B exits through a button that commits form B and then closes it.
    When form B closes, form A is there and the embedded browse shows the updated data. But the fields on form A outside the embedded browse do not reflect the changes. The only way to show the changes is to click away from the selected item on the embedded browse and back again, or to tab to one of the fields outside the browse and then away from it, when you move to the next field the changes to the previous field are shown.
    I have tried every combination of refresh, activate and so on both on the form and on the individual objects and I cannot find a way of refreshing these fields to reflect the changed data shown in the embedded browse.

    If this is a desktop app post a sample database here with instructions for us to follow to find and trigger the fault.

          Re: refreshing objects

          OK, lets go again.
          View the form called inventory home. On the right is an embedded browse. As you select (single click) each row in the embedded browse the data for the corresponding item appears in the fields on the left. Now doubleclick the selected row. A new form the view/edit inventory form appears. Now change, say, the model field. Ignore the button for the moment. Just right click and save the record, and close the form. On the inventory home form, the embedded browse now shows the updated data but the field on the left does not. I was a little surprised anything updated, I was expecting to have to refresh something. If you tab through the fields on the left they update.
          So I created a button which was an alternative way of exiting from view/edit inventory. The button does a commit of the new data and a close, and then refreshes the fields on the inventory home form. No joy, the form behaves exactly the same as with the save record, the embedded browse updates but not the fields.

            Nick,

            Try refreshing the display which can be found in action scripting under the form/browse heading. If you use this in the onactivate of the 'inventory home' form it should refresh the fields every time the form is activated. Alternatively you could put the refresh display on the save and exit button of your view/edit inventory form. Personally I wouldn't use such long names for forms especially with the forward slash. Hope it helps.

              Nick,

              Or you could just put this line of code in the form onactivate event.
              Code:
              Parentform.resynch()
              If I am understanding the help file correctly the object refresh does not perform a new query (i.e. get latest data). You need to use the object.resynch() where the object can be a browse,form or form object. Using parentform.resynch() will resynch all the objects on the form.

              I'm a novice myself so its a bit of the blind leading the blind but I'm sure Tom will be able to explain it better.

                Thanks, refreshing the display seems to work fine.

                  Be careful with parentform.resynch() - if that gets triggered before the record has been saved, something unexpected may happen. I don't recall what issue I ran into but I know this caused me problems in the past. It might be that it simply forced a save before I wanted one. Or, maybe I lost all my work. As I said, I'm not sure what happened but I do remember tracing it to using parentform.resynch() at the wrong time.

                    Cal,

                    I would imagine you would lose all the work on the form if it hasn't been saved before performing the resynch(). I hadn't really thought about it but will keep it in mind. I notice the refresh display commits the data before resynch() which is probably good practice in most circumstances. I am not sure why the action script has both resynch() and refresh(). I would have thought the refresh is somewhat redundent if you have already performed a resynch(). Do you know why both are used?

                    Code:
                    topparent.Commit()
                    topparent.Resynch()
                    topparent.Refresh_Layout()

                      Re: refreshing objects

                      I've never really been able to make complete sense of when these commands are needed. It has mostly been a matter of trial and error.

                      I usually start with .refresh_layout() now and experiment from there if it doesn't work.

                      If somebody could provide some real "root level" logic to what circumstances would drive the need for each of these refresh/resynch type commands it would really be helpful.

                          As a beginner to Alpha Five I've read all the help files and seen many of the examples and was very confused. I am at least somewhat heartened by the fact that many of you who have been around Alpha Five for a while don't understand this fully either!
                          It's OK to get suggestions from people who say "do it this way and it will be OK" but it's also good to know why!
