Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Table_get() in set

    Hi,

    Anyone know the method used to find the table position in a set given the table and set names then get the table order number.
    e.g.
    number = method table.child_get???
    t=table.current(number)

    The help files show all other set methods.

    I know there is one because I've used it before and seen it somewhere in Dr Wayne's book. The attached shows all other methods but not the one I need.

    Sorry, don't know if this is possible. Perhaps you're thinking of scripts that do it the other way round? i.e. iterating through the slots in the table to build a list of the tables in the set?

    I'm curious why you need the slot number to be found dynamically?

      Re: Table_get() in set

      Hi Tom,

      Thanks

      I am certain that Dr Wayne's book mentions this but have searched the PDF and cannot find it again. The method I need is not listed in the V9 help files along with all the other SET Methods.

      The reason I need it is so that the number will always be based on the table position in a set should the set structure ever be changed the slot number can still be retreived e.g.

      tbl=table.current(5)
      If the set structure should ever be changed, I can avoid having to locate all scripts using the above by 'Getting' the slot number first

        Re: Table_get() in set

        But why use the slot number at all? table.get() will return a pointer to the desired table, right?

          Re: Table_get() in set

          Tom,

          When I'm working on calculations, scripts etc. within a set I prefer to refer to the tables as table.current(1), table.current(2), table.current(3) etc.

          This has always worked for me,

            Me, too. But then I've also had to re-write my calculations and scripts when my set structure changes. Will be watching to see if others have an answer for you. Regards,

              Tom,

              I'm absolutely positive that this is in Dr. Wayne's book somewhere amongst the 457 pages but despite lots of searches I cannot find it again,

                The normal webhelp shows how to do this, obliquely, in <tbl>.relation_get().

                Code:
                t = set.open("yoursetname")
                i = 1
                lst_tbls = table.current(i).name_get()
                WHILE table.current(i).name_get() != "SYSTEM"
                	i = i + 1
                	chld = if(table.current(i).name_get() != "SYSTEM",table.current(i).name_get(),"")
                	lst_tbls = lst_tbls+ crlf()+chld

                END WHILE
                t.close()
                ui_msg_box("Parent is ",""+word(lst_tbls,1))
                for x = 2 to (i-1)
                	ui_msg_box("Child "+(x-1) +" is ",""+word(lst_tbls,x) +crlf()+"Is in slot "+x)

                  Stan, yes, you can iterate through the tables and build a list of the table names. The list can then be parsed to figure out which "slot" a given table occupies. -- tom

                    Thanks Stan/Tom,

                    The <TBL>.Relation_Get() could be used in your example but I'm still convinced there is a method already there to return the number not the relationship, I've definitely seen this in Dr Wayne's book and he uses this in one of his sample scripts, but I cannot find it again.

                      why not not use th name of the table - its better than the number

                      like if child1 is "invlineitems" you can say t=table.get("invlineitems")
                      now - no matter if you change the order of the set around, it still always gets that table.

                        Re: Table_get() in set

                        Martin,

                        I totally agree with you on table get.

                        Michael,

                        Even if you find your command you are looking for I would assume you would still need to know the child table name to get the table number within the set. You are talking twice the code to acomplish the same thing not that it would be that big of deal unless it was processed often in a loop

                        Your suggestion

                        tablenumber = somefunction("childtable")
                        result=table.current(tablenumber)

                        Martin's suggestion

                        result=table.get("childtable")

                        Both would end up with the same exact result but I would suspect that Martin's suggestion would be faster.

                          Re: Table_get() in set

                          Here is a UDF to get the table position in a set:
                          Code:
                          FUNCTION table_position AS N (Table_name AS C )
                          	dim x as n=1
                          	while table.current(x).name_get()<>table_name
                          	       x=x+1
                          	end while
                          	table_position=x
                          END FUNCTION
                          Since your objective is to get the table position to use it with table.current(), I limited the UDF to work with an open set. You can modify it to make work with any set, open or not.

                            Re: Table_get() in set

                            Jeff,

                            If I am creating scripts and calculations within a sets child records I need to refer to the tables as table.current(), it is simpler.

                            Table_get() does not give me Table.current() it gives me an open table that needs further manipulation for lots of reference such as opening, closing, running queries on child tables, deleting child records etc.

                            Think of a form showing the parent and several child browses then I can refer simply to any totals, scripts etc using:

                            Table.current(1) the parent
                            t=table.current(4)
                            t=table.current(5) etc

                            This give me the current child table that I can reference directly.

                            I can simply use the number, but this would require further work down the line if I ever need to change the structure of the set at some later date.

                            If you go to www.instantnurserymanager.co.uk/demos you will see some forms based on a parent and up to 10 different child records.

                              Here is a more universal UDF (works with any set, open or not):
                              Code:
                              FUNCTION tbl_position AS N (Set_name AS C, Table_name AS C )
                              	s=set.open(set_name)
                              	dim x as n=1
                              	while table.current(x).name_get()<>table_name
                              		x=x+1
                              	end while
                              	tbl_position=x
                              END FUNCTION
