Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    G, I like the looks of your code. Thanks for posting it. I wonder if it could be made a bit more robust by returning zero if the tablename passed to the function is not found? -- tom

      Re: Table_get() in set

      Sure.
      Code:
      FUNCTION tbl_position AS N (Set_name AS C, Table_name AS C )
      	s_lst=TABLES_IN_SET(set_name)
      	if contains(s_lst,table_name+".dbf")=.f.
      		tbl_position=0
      	else
      	s=set.open(set_name)
      	dim x as n=1
      	while table.current(x).name_get()<>table_name
      		x=x+1
      	end while
      	tbl_position=x
      	end if
      END FUNCTION
      Incidentally, table.current(0) is "system".
      I think a better approach than assigning zero if the table does not exist is to issue an error message:
      i.e. in the above code, replace tbl_position=0 with an error message.

        Why is it simpler?

        Table_get() does not give me Table.current() it gives me an open table that needs further manipulation for lots of reference such as opening, closing, running queries on child tables, deleting child records etc.
        Table.current() also give you an open table. There's no real difference.

        Think of a form showing the parent and several child browses then I can refer simply to any totals, scripts etc using:

        Table.current(1) the parent
        t=table.current(4)
        t=table.current(5) etc

        This give me the current child table that I can reference directly.
        t=table.get("Customers")
        t=table.get("invoices") etc

        or

        t1=table.get("Customers")
        t2=table.get("invoices") etc

        Why is table.current() better?

        If you go to www.instantnurserymanager.co.uk/demos you will see some forms based on a parent and up to 10 different child records.
        I see a web page. No "forms", unless you mean web "forms"? Don't understand what you are showing us?

          Re: Table_get() in set

          G. Thanks.

          I didn't know table.current(0) meant anything. Thanks for the info.

          I suggested zero since the function returns a numeric result. As long as the coder knows what numeric value is returned when a matching table is not found any number (other than a valid slot number) will suffice. I prefer to trap the error in the calling code, rather than embed the trap into the function, though I suppose this is a matter of personal preference. thanks again.

            Re: Table_get() in set

            Michael,

            I think you are missing my point. Table.open opens a new instance of the table. table.current and table.get both return a pointer reference to the currently opened table. The only different between table.current and table.get is the way you specify the open table that you want, either by number or name. See excerpt from the help for table.current.

            The TABLE.CURRENT() method returns an object pointer to an open table in the current session. Use TABLE.CURRENT()without a parameter to return a pointer to the sessions primary table.

            If no table is found in a particular slot, TABLE.CURRENT()creates an invalid object pointer. You can test the validity of an object pointer using the IS_OBJECT() function.

            You can also get a pointer to an open table using the TABLE.GET() method. For example, if you have opened a set and you want to get a pointer to one of the child tables in the set, (say "Invoice_Items"), you could use this command:

            child = table.get("invoice_items")

              Hi All,

              My mistake, I have now found Dr Wayne's reference on page 108, and my memory had served me wrong. He does in fact use the table_get() method for his examples and that will be good enough for me and serve my purpose for the future.

                For the sake of completion:
                Code:
                FUNCTION tbl_position AS N (Set_name AS C, Table_name AS C )
                	s_lst=TABLES_IN_SET(set_name)
                	if contains(s_lst,table_name+".dbf")=.f.
                		tbl_position=0
                	else
                	s=set.open(set_name)
                	dim x as n=1
                	while table.current(x).name_get()<>table_name
                		x=x+1
                	end while
                        set.close()
                	tbl_position=x
                	end if
                END FUNCTION
