Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Are we being taken advantage of?

    Hi Tom,

Thanks for mentioning about being able to create reports from the Runtime.

I have Runtime Plus (Enterprise Edition) and when I click on any button whilst in the CP nothing happens.

I can only open a form from either clicking the form icon or right mouse click and selecting from the menu, not from the View button.

There is no way that I can create or design a new report from this runtime.

Re: Are we being taken advantage of?

      Keith,

the developer, that would be you, needs to code some xbasic (placed in some type of menu or button arrangement) that allows the user to create or modify reports. You can also control which tables or sets can be used to create reports against. It is explained in the PDF that came with the runtime.

So yes you would be correct that the usual buttons don't work in the runtime.

Re: Are we being taken advantage of?

As an aside, it should be noted that if you require a relatively simple set of reports based on a flat dbf table, you are not limited to using Alpha5 to produce them. Microsoft Excel is able to read .dbf tables directly (at least the 2003 version does) and the Pivot Table facility will give you a fairly simple way of cross tabulating several fields and getting counts / summs /averages. (I would advise running them on a copy of the data, not the actual file).

It should also be noted that SPSS can import DBF files quite easily (using scripts or menu) and can obviously produce sophisticated summaries.

We capture data in Alpha5 and report in SPSS quite often.

          G'Day Tim,

Thank you for reminding me about creating and editing reports etc, "It is explained in the PDF that came with the runtime".

I trust that Gary has picked up on that too.

Still seems a bit odd that you cant even open a form from the CP in RT.

With regard to Chris's suggestion of getting the data in a spreadsheet, if the tables are encrypted then that would not be possible.

Re: Are we being taken advantage of?

FWIW, I can access the CP and open forms and tables with my version of A5v9RT. I did not put any restrictions in the database so I can do quite a bit with the right click menu. Of course, I can't edit them or create new ones.

Wow! The good ideas just keep coming. I just got the consultant to just export the records to an excel file so we could crunch them ourselves and make deadline.
What would be the difference in looking in the data in excel via an .xls file data dump of records (not a 'report' in the a5 sense) and looking at a .dbf file?

Kieth-SPSS analysis?! Really?!? Why didn't we know this *before*?!?!

Thanks so much for the advice!

The only difference is the manner in which you 'crunch' the data. Filtering and querying the data is quite easy and quick with Alpha, So many quick ways to do it and you don't have to create a report to print the data. Simply print the form or the browse.

Re: Are we being taken advantage of?

In case you want to chase the SPSS rout for analysis, here is the syntax used that reads the Alpha5 table, then saves and reloads the SPSS.sav file (to run your analysis on).

It is correct to say that Alpha5 is very capable at number crunching, but I would say from my experience its not the best tool for producing dynamic cross tabulations, hence the use of SPSS.

                  GET FILE = 'c:\spssfile.sav'.

                  continue SPSS syntax...
