Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Can't get a " & " in an expression

    The following expression is part of a case statement:
    alltrim(Fname1)+" "+alltrim(Lname1)+" & "+alltrim(Fname2)+" "+alltrim(Lname2)

    I want the ampersand (&) to print as an & But this evaluates to
    John Smith _Mary Jones

    If I use chr(38),which I think is the ascii value, like this: alltrim(Fname1)+" "+alltrim(Lname1)+" "+chr(38)+alltrim(Fname2)+" "+alltrim(Lname2)

    I get John Smith Mary Smith

    I don't have v9 but it works in v8 in the interactive. Did you try it there?

    Code:
    fname1 = "Tom"
    lname1 = "Smith"
    fname2 = "Bobby"
    lname2 = "Jones"

    ? alltrim(Fname1)+" "+alltrim(Lname1)+" & "+alltrim(Fname2)+" "+alltrim(Lname2)
    = "Tom Smith & Bobby Jones"
    There can be only one.

      Re: Can't get a " & " in an expression

      Yes I agree it does work as expected in interactive but the evaluation of my cal field expression is as described _ not &

      Now seeing that it did work in interactive I went forward using that calc field in my report and the report did print just fine using & rather than _.

      Guess I should have tried that first

      Thanks for your assistance

        Must be a quirk in the expression builder.

          Gary, try this: Alltrim(First_Name)+" && "+alltrim(Last_Name)
          (2 ampersands)

              You want this "to print" where? It works fine in a ui_msg_box() command.

              FWIW: My best guess is that it needs to be "escaped" with the backslash character:
              " \& "

                Is no one reading his intermediate post?

                went forward using that calc field in my report and the report did print just fine using & rather than _.
                The only problem seemed to be that he wasn't seeing the ampersand in the expression builder as he was developing the expression.

                I think.

                  Well, I know I read the first line of it. Does that count? :o

                    Re: Can't get a " & " in an expression

                    The conversion of the & ampersand to an _ underscore is a consequence of the Windows I/O associated with buttons and hot keys. Some places in Alpha uses I/O that displays it and sometimes not. I believe XDialog static text does show ampersand, and dynamic text does not. But in general, it does print out as the character string, no matter what it looks like on screen.

                      Continuing down the xdialog path, an & in both static and dynamic text requires escaping with another &, otherwise it displays as an underscore. So in xdialog text use && if you want & to display.

                      (I had a note on my desk for some time to research this problem in one of my routines and this thread finally got me to do it!)

                        I believe in cases where you use a &&, that it creates an ampersand with an underscore, not necessarily the desired result. But off the top of my head, it seems that Xdialog {'some text} vs {Text=variablename} vs static text vs text in a text control box all act different with single and double ampersands.

                        In a similar fasion, XDialog treats some ASCII characters (e.g. {, }, or ! and probably others) a bit differently depending upon what object is used.

                        It would be nice if XDialog had an escape character, but I don't think it really does.
