Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Version 9 observations.

Last week we have purchased new Alpha Five V9 - Platinum. I have been working with alpha for around one year with version 8 till last week, now v9.

    Below my observations about V9:

    1. V9 does not support dual monitor display V8 was not good with it too. If you define in field rules lookup to be shown as drop-down, it will not work on the second monitor, also alpha likes to lock the drop-down lookups from time to time (I havent found pattern on this yet but it does happen and it forces my users to restart the form).
    2. It is not easy to put button inside the browse (edit display format) when you set it up in properties the moment you OK the changes buttons appear and disappear instantly - the only way to force the button to stay is to define image first and approve, and then switch it to button (this took me some time to figure out not to mention few nervous breakdowns).
    3. Browses on forms works as good as in version 8 really poor! (and I always though tables and browses were the base of databases not in alpha)
    4. I also found that if u have filed with date or time in browse you can change its value using the new feature (after clicking on the small icon next to the field when field has focus) even when the field is READ-ONLY!
And last tip dont try to modify your application in V8 after installing v9 dont even open it in the v8 developer version because all opened form will become damaged - v8 or v9 will not be able to open it again.

Although V9 introduces a lot of new features (that I dont really use anyway) and it still has some support and patches (hopefully for some time before they introduce v10 and forget about V9 again) I must say that I was a little disappointed when I installed V9.

Dont get me wrong I am not complaining (only) about alpha it puts bread on my table now and I am stuck with it some more time but it will have no sense if I write here just how wonderful alpha is, because you know that already!

The reason I have posted this is to share my opinions and hopefully find some help from you Alpha Lovers! or at least convince myself that is not only my problem (not my poor development only but there is something wrong out there.....)

So if you use alpha and you have the same issues please write about it here maybe it will convince somebody from Alpha team to do something about it.

If you dont have that issues please let me also know- then I will know that is something wrong on my side.

    Regards,

    Re: Version 9 observations.

Have you reported the problems you are having to the Alpha support team?

On the Help tab in Alpha Five, select "Send a bug report".

I have reported a number of problems recently some have had replies and some haven't, but generally the problems are getting solved. Although, I have a problem at the moment with screen corruption see my post:

    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=75913

This seems to have started since installing the latest patch 1772_3208?

I am interested to hear a little more on your experience with browses ..... I thought that V9 fixed all prior problems with browses and this was something I was kinda counting on when upgrading to V9.

I was able to replicate this in AlphaSports and sent in a bug report weeks ago. The reply I received was that the next patch would have a command that you could insert in the autoexec to disable the new feature. I guess it is easier to disable it than to just make it work properly.:(

Your guess is probably correct. However, my guess is it will take a bit of time to repair and the folks at Alpha wanted to issue a temporary work around so we wouldn't be left in a lurch.

I honestly hope you are right, but in the latest release notes for 1772-3208 it states:

"Some users have requested that this automatic display of the icon be suppressed. There is now a new setting which can be made using Xbasic to turn off the automatic display of this icon. The command is:
            a5.system_mode_set("Show_Calender_Icon_For_Type-In_Fields", "No")

The default value for this setting is Yes."

I have a question. If something does not work why not make the default "no" until it is fixed?

Why is it that users/developers have modify their databases to circumvent this bug? I would just like to apply the patch and be done with it.

Sorry if I am letting off a little steam but I persuaded our company to upgrade to V9 a month ago. After deploying it for a week, I had to go back to v8 because of "anomalies". Yes, I have submitted "bug reports" and some bugs have been addressed by this latest patch but I am looking like a chump.

Please do not get me wrong. I really love this product and I do not think I could find a more "cost-effective" alternative for our company even if I wanted to....but man, it's painful sometimes!

                Thanks for comments....

What about dual monitor display and why list boxes are not working on secondary monitor? - because of that we might need to go back to V8!!!

V8 was showing the drop down menu but on the first monitor - V9 is doing nothing at all or is freezing! - that is real pain in the butt for my clients cos they don't know why they can not use pull down menu when the widow is on second monitor.
