Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    a5 window size

    I have looked through help files and the forum to try and get an answer to this situation. Unlike others who are interested in specific window sizes for forms, I would like to set a specific size for the a5 window shell to be less than the size of my computer screen (15" laptop). Unlike other applications that seem to have a memory of how large a window the application holds from previous viewings, Alpha seems to always open to maximum size. I slide the a5 window down to about 4x7 inches, close the program, open the program and it is back to maximum.

    Is this standard for Alpha or is the a function I can add in autoexec that runs to have the main alpha window only open to 4x7 inches?

    Thanks

    Re: a5 window size

    The Alpha 5 window mode (minimized, maximized or windowed) and it's size (if windowed) are recalled for me normally. I believe this is a window's or shortcut setting, or possibly in the AUTOEXEC of the Alpha database you begin.

    Try using a simple shortcut and see if it happens. There may be a windows or Alpha 5 setting that does this, but I have not investigated.

      Ira:
      Thanks for responding. I am finding some inconsistencies. I went to AlphaSports. I opened it via Alpha Five Recent Databases. The A5 window maximized, but the form window was about 3x5. I clicked on the resize square in upper right hand corner of A5 window and the window changed to about 1/2 the maximum. I then created a shortcut as you suggested.

      I openend AlphaSports from the shortcut and the A5 window again maximized. I tried clicking on the resize square, but nothing happened this time.

      This has been my experience, for the most part, with all my custom apps. However, only AlphaSports when opened from within Alpha v9 resizes when clicking on the resize square.

      I am on a laptop using Vista Premium Home.

      I have an Access Commerical program that remembers its last open setting and a commercial Planner Program that also does the same. Notebook remembers, as does OpenOffice Write. My FireFox web browser does not stay in the prior configuration.

        Pete,

        As Ira said it could be related to the shortcut. Right click the shortcut and then look at properties and look at the "RUN" option. There should be three choices: Normal window, Maximized, minimized. I have Vista and with the option set to normal window Alpha opens with the prior screen sized from the last time I closed Alpha.

        Also under the control panel go to File / Database Properties and you will find an option to force Alpha to Maximized whenever that specific database is loaded.

          Re: a5 window size

          I built a new database this morning and lo and behold, the a5 window size took. I will play around with this some more and see if it was something I did in the old database or something with Vista.

          Thanks very much for your suggestions and for responding.

            To set the Alpha window size, I use this on the onit event of my opening for..

            Is this what you need?

            'a5.restore()
            a5.top = 05
            a5.left = 05
            a5.width=870
            a5.height = 610

              Michael:
              Thanks, I will try that. I found in playing around with my database that initially when creating a shortcut, I set the window to "default", but Alpha would then not create the shortcut (sort of like when I click on the "hide status bar" box and sometimes it takes and other times it doesn't).

              I finally was able to create the shortcut and the database now "remembers" its previous window size. I would think you suggestion would make it a definite.

              I just put it into the program. Thanks for your help....:)
