Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Setting form icon with XBasic error

Per the A5V9 help, a form's icon can be set using xBasic code
    Code:
    Form icon
    Sets the icon
    :formname.window.icon as C
What is the correct syntax for doing so?

I have inserted a bitmap image named MyTestIcon in the control panel and have also placed it in a folder C:\Test

    frmMyTestForm.window.icon = "C:\Test\MyTestIcon.bmp"
    frmMyTestForm.window.icon = "MyTestIcon"

Either way, I get the same error message:
    Code:
Object does not support requested interface
    Thanks,

I'm not sure you can specify a filename. I believe you have to use one of the icon names available in the list revealed by the object explorer.
    There can be only one.

      Stan,

I have looked in the object Explorer and don't see any way to add to the list there.

But there are two icon names that different from the others:
      1. User
      2. User_object16X16_0

Do you or anyone know how these might be used?
I can't find any hits for either in the A5V9 help.

I am trying to avoid setting the form's icon via Form Properties, and would like to set/change the icon dynamically.
By setting the icon property with XBasic code just before the form is displayed, it should be possible to change the appearance of all forms in an application. This approach sure would beat individually maintaining the icon property for each form.

      Thanks,

I would guess they are icons for the User Control in the Object toolbox (form design) but you could set one as the choice for a form via the Object Explorer and find out.

          Stan,

I did attempt to use these two user icons and they didn't display anything.

I can see how bitmaps are easier to set with code, but changing an icon with code should still be possible.

Try saving your bitmap as a .ico file and then

            frmMyTestForm.window.icon = "C:\Test\MyTestIcon.ico"

Doesn't work in v8 but doesn't error either.

              Stan,

Just wanted to confirm that it does not work in V9, but then it doesn't error out either!

Something tells me that I'd better also investigate setting bitmaps with XBasic code. I had similar issues several months ago, where properties could be set in the Object Explorer but wouldn't work with XBasic code.

So maybe I should widen the scope of my question to whether bitmap images and icons can be set dynamically rather than manually set either in the Object Explorer or a form's properties.

Looks like I have my weekend project cut out for me!

              Thanks for your assistance,

I found the user and User_object16X16_0 icons.

                  Hi Bob,
Here's a little bit for you to give you a jump on the weekend's activities.

It appears that as the Object Explorer only displays the Window Icon when a form is in design mode I tried the following with success but don't know if it could be made transparent to a user and as design mode is not available in a runtime, it cannot be done there so may be a useless method truthfully.

In the interactive editor I could change my form icon with ---

a5_layout_design("Machines","form") opens my Machines form in design mode

Then running one of the next changes the icon. These are bitmaps I imported into Alpha.

                  :Machines.Window.Icon ="magenta_dot_32x24" My "invisible" icon
:Machines.Window.Icon ="heart_plus" Just a big heart is all!

If nothing else it will maybe save you some time from exploring this avenue of doing it.
                  Mike
