Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Xdialog Examples?

The code archive forum has only a handful of xdialog examples for us.

I'm interested in seeing more. Especially any that illustrate using listboxes and ownerdrawn strings to emulate browse displays. For example, the Code Archive contains a good example (from Peter Greulich sp?) illustrating the use of a form called as dialog to edit or enter items for an embedded browse in the calling form. I'd love to see an example that offeres the same functionality but doesn't use any forms at all. i.e. Displays invoice_hdr fields for a single header record, plus all the related invoice_item records; then permits items to be edited, entered, or deleted.

Has anyone got anything to offer?

    Re: Xdialog Examples?

    Hi Tom,

I have done quite a bit of work on this using HTML forms on MDI xdialogs and currently my script is approx 4000 lines which produces auto sizing 'browses' of many types on one HTML page.

This was all achieved by studying the Dynamic content and advanced example in HTML forms under whats new in V9 in the learning Xdialog database .

The real beauty of using HTML is the auto wrapping of data it provides within each cell of the 'Browse' as shown on the attached example.

      Tom,

In addition to Lance's suggestion, which I think looks great by the way, we can now save a browse's (as in from the browse tab) definition as code that you can drop into an xdialog. Alpha refers to this as embedded browses on Xdialogs.
I have only experimented with the feature but have found it quite easy to use. The nice thing about this is that you can easily design a browse that uses all of the column advanced display features like buttons, bubble help etc. Then paste the generated code in to a new or existing xdialog. You have to tweak the code a bit to have the browse filter on the header info but from what I recall it was not to difficult.

Tim, thanks. I'd forgotten about that new feature.

I've also been looking at the Master-Detail Listview example in the Learning Xdialog folder. It seems to offer what I need. I think I can replace Peter's example using a Listview that calls a second xdialog to edit individual item table records.

If you have an example using embedded browses in xdialogs where the xdialog shows a single record from a "header" table, and uses the embedded browse to show the related "item" records I'd be very interested in studying it. Thanks again.

I am sure I tried that but am having one of those 'Now where did I put that' moments. :( When I find it I will post it but I have a feeling you might have a fully working solution by the time I do.
