resorting browse after modifying data

I have an embedded browse where each line corresponds to an inventory item. Double clicking the embedded browse pops up a form where you can edit the data. I use reynch and refresh_layout on the original form containing the embedded browse before exiting the popup form so the new data populates the embedded browse OK. But the embedded browse does not re-sort the data.
If I "re-open" the form containing the embedded browse using AS and using the existing open form, then the browse will re-sort using the original sort criteria. But the user could have changed the criteria by clicking the column header, and I lose this change.
Any ideas?

topparent.Active_Drilldown().QUICK_SORT()

in there after the resynch/refresh.

How do you (actually how can I) know that you can add the quick_sort() method in this example?

<OBJECT>.QUICK_SORT( Direction as L )

.quick_sort() takes a pointer (object name in this instance) as the left hand "portion".

<OBJECT>.ACTIVE_DRILLDOWN()

Supplies the object name.

In a script you could

ptr = topparent.ACTIVE_DRILLDOWN()
ptr.quick_sort()


since we know ptr and topparent.ACTIVE_DRILLDOWN() are equivalent, just substitute.

topparent.ACTIVE_DRILLDOWN().quick_sort()

It is not always apparent that you can "collapse" code like this.

Consider

tbl = table.current()
tbl.change_begin()
tbl.fieldname = 1
tbl.change_end(.t.)
tbl.close()

or (not that you'd want to)

table.current().change_begin()
table.current().fieldname = 1
table.current().change_end(.t.)
table.current().close()


both do the same thing.

Generally useful to me when I want do return something in an expression that would require more than one code line.

A better example...

'three lines, you can do this in a script
tbl = table.open("sometablename")
ix = tbl.index_primary_put("sometagname")
num_recs = ix.records_get()

'one line, you can create an expression in the builder for a calculated field
num_recs = table.open("sometablename").index_primary_put("sometagname").records_get()

Wow Stan, I would never have understood that last example though I have seen others do this in their scripts. Thank you for that very clear explanation.
