Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha 9 Platinum Edition keeps freezing

Since having installed the latest update Alpha keeps freezing, and appears
very unstable, performance has dropped, slower to load.Has anyone else had these problems. I am running on Vista Ultimate, and still use Lotus Approach for my main Database work,do not have the confidence,to switch to Alpha. I think
    we need Version 10 quickly.

Others have had similar problems and Alpha is working on it. The biggest problem is getting something to fail consistently so it can be found and fixed. Can you get yours to fail in a consistent, repeatable manner? If so, please send a bug report to Alpha with that info - I'm sure they'd like to see your app if you can tell them how to create a consistent crash.

FWIW: I do have a couple apps running in v9 with no problems but one other (much more complex app that was upgraded from A5v5 to v7 to v9) is having problems with crashes. Unfortunately they are random crashes.

Is everyone who is experiencing these crashes running vista?? Seems to me everytime I see someone with a post that starts out with "running on vista" it ends in tragedy...

Re: Alpha 9 Platinum Edition keeps freezing

Well, my client is running a V9 desktop app on Vista Home Premium and it freezes at different times. We can't track it down to any one area so far. The app has a Member table and a Payment table in a 1 to many relationship and if he deletes a Member it takes 3-5 minutes to delete the one record. The machine just hangs there for that time and then all is well. Then out of the blue it will do the same thing, but maybe 3 days later. Lookup tables in the main data entry form sometimes take 2 minutes to load and other times they take 1 second. Who knows?!

I'd be curious as to whether or not alpha employees run vista or not...hopefully someone can find a way to reproduce this consistantly and we can get it cleared up.

Re: Alpha 9 Platinum Edition keeps freezing

I had similar problems using Vista Home Premium during a lot of development work. However, I uninstalled v9, cleaned out my Registry, reinstalled the full v9, packed the files and have now worked on three new projects with no freezing whatsoever (knock on wood). I have become so brave I only backup once every few hours.

As noted in a previous thread I also had some issues with Action Script buttons doing or not doing some things. All that has cleared up.

I am thinking that perhaps doing lots of alterations with code, both Action Scripts and xbasic may contribute to some of these problems some of you are seeing and that I had as well.

Here is a question that just came to mind. I don't use the Web portion of Alpha at all, but could having both the Web and the desktop in one package have an affect on some of these issues or are the two totally independent of each other?
"Ollie, remember how dumb I used to be? Well, I'm much better now."

I was very interested to read the posts in response to my problem. I am using Vista Ultimate, when Version 9 was released
I had very few problems, however as the patches were released, the
instability problems started, and continued with each new patch.
I have fervently downloaded every patch, with the hope that Alpha
would really perform. It is also interesting to note as far as I can see there has been no response from Alpha Software on this Board. As users we really should expect a better, amd more stable
product, considering the database software market gets more demanding, and competitive.

Maybe you should go back to the build that works best for you.

I have been having the same issues since October. I have one table in particular that is sporadically taking forever to open or anything associated with it. Sometimes it will take 3 minutes to open the table itself, sometimes it is lightning fast.

                          Any thoughts/suggestions?

I went through and made sure my antivirus excluded my database folder, and keeping your drives defraged well helps alot also. Pack ur table i do mine weekly and update ur indexes once in a while. My a5v9 multiuser database is running great thanks to all here on the forum.

On the same subject, I have an application that has a particular form containing lots of calculation displays. The app has run OK for years now, that is, until Build >=October 7th 2008 1772-3208 and from then onwards this form is now too slow to open and navigate that it is unusable. I am certain it is to do with the bug fix in Nov 1st 1821-3212 that fixed the 'Calculated fields A_case bug'

I have managed to create a sample dbase with stripped down form for a Bug Report that proves my point of OK with builds less than Nov 1st but too slow to use with builds >= that date. Perhaps someone else experiencing this could go back to Oct 7th 1772-3208 and see if their problem also goes away.

In the mean time I have sent off a report with the sample dbase but would like some back up from others experiencing the problem.
