Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

print report using current record in a form

been screwing with this for an hour and it's probably pretty simple, but i can't figure it out.

have a button on a form in a set. i want to click the button and print a report using either the current record, or the invoice number on the form.

all i can get it to do is print all of the records.

    can someone enlighten me?

    thanks

may have figured it out, unless somebody sees something wrong with i or has a better suggestion.

i put this on the button click event:

    Parentform.mark_record()
    print the report
    Parentform.unmark_record()

and in the report i selected maked records.

If your app is running stand alone that's fine. If it's running on a LAN and there's a possibility others will be marking records while you run your report it's problematic. A better approach would be to filter based on the current record number or the primary table's invoice number.

        Tom,
Wouldn't said filters also come across over a LAN and so cause similar/same problems? If so, for both ways, an unmarking operation just prior or a detach query should work to help prevent incorrect results... I think.....

Mike, there's a big difference in changing records in the table (which of course is what marking records does), and building a query list on your local machine which is used to select records for display or printing (which is what a query does). 3 users can run separate queries simultaneously. 3 users will be in trouble if they all start marking records at the same time. See the diff?

            Hi Gary,

If you use Action Scripting, after selecting the report you want to print you are given the option to filter the records.

You can either select Current Record, or if that is not available, a field from the report that matches a field on the form.

No coding required, Alpha does it for you.

No need to Mark records just to use for the print run.

In doing a query or filter locally on a form/browse is when I thought it would not make any difference as you state.

Obviously I am still not completely out of the darkness regarding Alpha!! I had thought that if a table was queried/filtered by a user, then all the other users would see the same query/filtered results. Good thing I had qualified my answer in my prior post with "I think"!!

                thanks for the replies.

tom, i'll check out the query method, just wasn't sure how to do it. tried a few different things and it was just easier to mark it and have the report set to print marked records.

i doubt anyone else using the db would be marking records at the same time, they're only marked for printing and it's unmarked within a second.

but i'll give it a shot.

can someone please give me syntax to create a filter so i can print the current record? i can't seem to figure it out.

i ended up storing the current record's invoice number in a variable and using that as a filter.

                    Hi Gary,

You have the answer in your hands, have a look at the button, Print this Invoice, on the Invoice form of AlphaSports.

Examine the Events->OnPush and edit the one line of Preview a Layout. Click on the Next button notice the options of Select records to print.

All the work is done for you. No need to drive yourself mad.
