Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Works on AlphaSports form but not on my form????

To navigate in a parent-child set (1-M), I'm trying to create a combo box for selecting the parent record, very basic stuff. The "Customer Information" form in AlphaSports has just such a field in the upper left corner of the form and it works 100%.

When I duplicate that setup on my form, I can click on the pull-down arrow until I go ballistic and NOTHING happens!!!! What little piece of voodoo am I missing????

Mayby I should reinvent the wheel and build my own controls?

The Alphasports 'Customer Information' form is based on a single table. You mentioned a 1 to many set. You should be able to make it work in either situation.

Please post an example and we can look at it...

I can do that, BUT, first I have to figure out how to dummy-up a copy without any live client data. The Government of Canada, in their infinite fricking wisdom, have passed some very nasty privacy legislation involving stiff fines and jail time if I release client information out into the public domain.

I'll try to create a subset of my data without any actual client info and then post it. Thanks for replying so quickly.

And you think the Canadian government has an exclusive on that???

Empty the tables involved - check that the deleted records are really gone - right click properties of each table - statistics tab - deleted records should be zero.

Then add a couple of records to test the data entry functions......

btw, looks like you live in a beautiful part of the world.... ( I used to do a lot of work for your gov and traveled to many parts of your country...)

Your way of stripping the live data sounds a WHOLE lot easier than what I was envisioning. However, I have some work that I need to get done before I can deal with this, later today.

And yes, it is one of the more beautiful places in Canada, very near the south end of the Okanagan Lake valley. We're about 10 miles north of the USA border (in a straight line), about 30 miles north-west of Oroville, WA by road.

Zip file will be posted later. Thanks.

Funny how "later today" can turn into "tomorrow" at the blink of an eye. At any rate, here is an abbreviated version of my database with some sample data.

In case it triggers, I have a startup form with an "AlphaFive" button in the lower right corner that lets you out to the control panel.

The form that I am trying to develop is called "S_CBLink" based on a set of the same name.

That AlphaSports example has an onchange event for the dropdown list that causes an action to occur when the value changes.

              Yours doesn't.

You can see the event by right clicking the object and selecting events.

Re: Works on AlphaSports form but not on my form????

Thanks for pointing that out. I've taken a look at the code behind the OnChange event and it boggled my DOS-oriented brain. If that's what it takes to make that pulldown control on the combo box actually work, then I guess I'm going to have to scrap that form.

Thank you for all your help.

                  Bruce,
I remember doing as you are on my first attempt at this--why not try to adapt the OnChange script to use your fields and such---I did not understand all the code written there at first either, but am thinking it did not take all that much to modify and use. Much better to completely understand everything but don't let that stop you from attempting these things as many times it is not all that hard to do....and once you have accomplished it you will be much further ahead (but not knowing your timeline on learning maybe it would take too long??).

Re: Works on AlphaSports form but not on my form????

In a perfect world......... However, in the real world, I just don't the luxury of playing around with this for very much longer. My day-to-day production use is being carried on in an old DOS database program (Paradox 4.5) that is just barely co-existing with M$-Windows, my boss doesn't want to fork over any cash to hire someone who knows how to get our program implemented in AlphaFive, I'm currently putting in 55-60 hours a week in what should be our "slow" period, and that is going to 85-95 hours a week when our busy season in March and April hits.

Rather than try to figure out how to get a combo box control working, I'll go with a very basic browse and implement the code to grab whatever client code the user clicks on, then go from there....... It won't be very pretty but maybe I can at least get it functional which will just have to be good enough for now.
