Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Appack Not working

I was wondering if anyone had the appack from v5-7 and found it not working in v9. I can open the templates up, but get a "Failed to save" error and only get the tables with nothing else. Tried to make the forms but no go there as well.

Anyone know how to fix this?

    Kevin,

    appack
    ?

Not found in searching the Alpha Five web help. A search on this board with the search term "appack" found one thread from 2004. Did you view this thread?

Failed to save generally relates to an error with the operating system. Usually permissions to write to a specific directory.

I would not be at all surprised if something designed for A5V7 had problems in v9.
    There can be only one.

It is located here: (removed broken link) including the contact manager, Time and Billing Application, and Order Entry Application. It says it works with v5 and above, however it does not work in v9.

              Kevin,

Eventually found these on an old laptop, in the version 5 folder, thought I still had them somewhere. Opened them in version 9 and all worked fine (with limited testing).

I usually get the 'failed to save' error when I download someones example database in zip format, open the zip then double click on the database file. Then realize that I have not unzipped the database in my haste!!

Hmmm. I guess I will try to reinstall and see if it works. Thanks.

                    Re: Appack Not working

I watched your video, here is what I noticed.

You are running Vista and have your database stored in "Program Files" on your I:\ drive. Granted this is not the typical location for "Program Files" and as such it may be a folder you created manually. Otherwise it could be the default "Program Files" used by the OS and since it is Vista there are some new safe guards on that folder. Search these forums on using vista and where to store the database. This may help with your issue.

If that fails you can manually track down what is causing the error message. Using a utility called Filemon, (written by Sysinternals, now part of Microsoft) you can log what file access attempts where made and what the status of the attempt was. Using this utility you can determine where your permissions need to be modified and make granular adjustments as needed.

With Lance reporting that he was able to make the software work in version 9 I would take hope in that report. Hopefully, Lance will come back and report what OS he was using to test.

Yep Andrew you got it good old XP Pro.

Don't know about the states but some retailers over here are now selling PC's/laptops with XP on again. It cost me more 6 weeks ago to buy a new Dell laptop with XP Pro on it but I think it was worth it not to have the hassle!
