Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Browses Build 1888-3221 working incorrectly

Build 1884_3220 did not work correctly either for browses.

The problem I had occurred when using an index and retrieving a record. The record would not appear at the top of the list. Instead it appeared to be located in the middle of the records shown.

So I have reverted back to 1847_3216. It works there like it should.

Not yet. Don't have time right now to reinstall the version again and submit the bug. Will do it later this evening.

        Hi Gary,

The record would not appear at the top of the list. Instead it appeared to be located in the middle of the records shown.
I have been advised this is a new enhancement and the you should activate the row highlight to see the selected record.

I was subsequently told this would be fixed in the next patch, which is now available. Download it and see what you get.

          Keith,

If you notice the title of the post, Gary is using the latest patch and states that the problem exits in 3221 as well as the last 3220.

            Hi Bill,

Just was reading the content and forgot the title.

If after using the Find by Key for the first time the row does not get highlighted, click on the scroll bar. Subsequent use of find by key does highlight the row.

The work around at the moment is to set the browse properties by checking the Highlight Row box.

Personally, I don't like this new enhancement. Now I have to look in the middle of the list of records instead of looking at the first record displayed. It is NOT in my opinion the most natural way for the senses to work. The eye and brain works better seeking a natural spot.

I sent a bug report and they state that it is intended to be a major improvement and designed to have a more consistent behavior within the browse and more in keeping with generally accepted Windows conventions.

I of course disagree with this browse behavior.

                  Reply from Selwyn
you HAVE to have 'highlight row' selected if you don't have the 'row selector' turned on on.

if you don't want to turn on 'highlight row' then you HAVE to turn on 'row selector'

I understand that this is a subtle difference from the old browse, but that's the way it is.
Personally, now that I can see the record highlighted that is good enough, as it is all the other fields on the form are what I really need. The browse is only there for a quick view and record selector.

Re: Browses Build 1888-3221 working incorrectly

I stayed with build 1847_3216 when I saw that there was a new browse being introduced. Glad I did. I am a little confused about the record now being displayed in the middle of the new browse.

Many of my browses are indexed by a date field. Does the browse display when a form is first loaded show the records in the correct date order (no record will have been selected at that stage)? If a record is clicked on does it shuffle the browse so that it is then displayed, most probably out of sequence, in the middle of the browse?

If I upgrade from 1847_3216 can I still use the old browse?

                      Hi Mike,

Have a look how Alphasports Customer Info browse works with the latest patch. The index is maintained, so that should not be an issue for you.

                      Do you have Skype?

                        Hi Keith

Thanks for reply. I don't want to upgrade to a later build yet as I am distributing software to clients and don't want to risk the new browse. That's why I asked those questions.

Sorry I don't have Skype yet but think I must do something about that.

                        Regards. Mike
