Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    New Browse Fixed??

I have been following some of the threads posted here on the new Browse that has been introduced into v9 and wondered how I would find out the latest status on such a high priority fix .... Im kinda hesitant to move foward with v9 until something so important as Browse has been labeled as stable. Does anyone think it would be a good idea for Alpha to post a thread that would stick at the top of the forum that would provide status on high priority fixes? This way everyone wouldnt be bombarding them, trying to find out the same information. As of the last patch it still looks like Browse is questionable ...... can anyone from Alpha confirm? Has anyone from Alpha tried to describe what is really going on with Browse and what some of the positives might be for the new version? Since browse is such an important component, was this beta tested and validated by the user community? I actually bought v9 thinking that my issues with browse might be over ..... its a little tuff thinking I might be in for another rocky session with v9 and mayyyyyyybe It might be fixed in v10. I really like Alpha and think their strategy for an all(most)-in-one development environement is the way to go ... preach it to all my friends .... but I do have to admit, starting to get tired of dealing with basic issues that just shouldnt be. As others have stated, I hope Alpha understands how important this forum is and that people here notice they are there in the beginning of a new releases and then they dissapear after a time. I think Alpha should have a moderator in the forum at all times or at least be scanning the forum a little more religously and communicating status more often. Hopefully someone at Alpha is listening ... if not, at least I got it out ...:)

I would say just roll back to 3216. The browse there seems to be just fine. I would not let the fact that the newest patch doesn't seem to have all the kinks worked out yet keep you from moving ahead. As has been said quite a few times here - if you are running a version that is stable and works for you there is no need to update to the latest patch just to have it......I think I am going to start paying more heed to this advice as well. But, I have no doubt the Alpha folks will get the browse rewrite squared away. The browse in V9 prior to this recent issue has worked well for me.

I think Alpha should have a moderator in the forum at all times or at least be scanning the forum a little more religously and communicating status more often.
    I totally agree.

      New Browse Fixed??
To paraphrase former president Clinton, "it depends on what your definition of 'fixed' is."

Since everyone one of us has differing expectations for the browse object, we're probably never all going to be happy with it. There's always going to be those who want it to behave the way the check register in Quickbooks behaves or something similar. And in their efforts to make us all happy the good folks at Alpha Software will continue to tinker with it and in their efforts from time to time they're going to make it worse before they make it better again...

Whether we like it or not, we are all beta testers for an Alpha Software version as long as they are continuing to patch that version. I guess we are no longer beta testers for V8 because they have ceased patching it. Maybe it's as simple as "if you don't want to have to deal with a future patch making your application unstable, then develop in V8!"

you HAVE to have 'highlight row' selected if you don't have the 'row selector' turned on on.

if you don't want to turn on 'highlight row' then you HAVE to turn on 'row selector'

I understand that this is a subtle difference from the old browse, but that's the way it is.
The Highlight Row and Row Selector are both in Browse properties with check boxes.

          Re: New Browse Fixed??

Browse behavior is always subective and wasnt my main complaint .... my main compaint was that they put out a new version of a major component for Alpha and even though, yes, I know they will eventualy get the bugs worked out, they could have done a better job at communicating. This was a major change, just like a product upgrade .... if described properly, the alpha users could have decided on their own whether to move foward with the patch. It kinda feels like Alpha just snuck it in under the wire and hoped they could fix what they needed to as they went along. I still dont really have a clear idea on whether things are stable with the latest patch. If you read the release notes, it sounds like there has never really been a problem. Does anyone have a read on the latest patch ... is it ok? And Im not talking about behavior .... I would just like to know if it is stable enough to actually be used. And for people that want to play on the word stable, please dont .... the latest patch SHOULD be stable if alpha has done the correct testing before release. The alpha community shouldnt be subjected to beta testing without knowing they are beta testing. Anyway, back to the original question ... can any state whether they think the latest patch is stable enough for use?

            Hi Glenn,

Do you have a particular problem with the browse in latest patch?

What other people are doing in their applications may, or may not be valid to you.

I have found that the latest runtime patch prevents the browse from scrolling properly. Where can i find all previous patches?
              thanks.

                  Keith,
I have had a number of issues with the browse and through this great forum and quite a bit of my own sweat, have come up with work-around after work-around. One day its refresh browse .... one day its resynch browse .... one day its repaint ... then one day, browse is supposed to work ok without all the workarounds. Now you have code bloat that might have an affect or not. The latest is ... between tabs, you have to refresh your embedded browses to get it to set the pointer to the correct record in a set. And there are more ... and yes you can argue bug versus "thats the way it is", but Im just asking for some consistency within the product ..... and a little more communication and explanation of best practices around new feature sets from Alpha. I read a post here that stated we should all speak a little louder to have Alpha hear us .... all im trying to do is throw my 2 cents in.

                    Re: New Browse Fixed??

Recent patches would suggest that the patches are not being suitably tested before being made available. Alpha's eagerness to please and live up to their reputation of providing patches quickly is starting to have a negative effect when they introduce more problems. They need to take a step back, stop all work on V10 and get V9 working. Then test, test and test some more. If they want to make the patch available for beta testing while they are testing it that is fine, just let everyone know this is the case and then each individual can decide whether to try it or wait for confirmation that all is okay. Now I know this will still not catch or solve all bugs/problems but it may improve on what is currently happening.
