Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Reports and Tallies

    Hi,

I have a table of the following format :

    Client No Surname COB Sex

    1 White 5 2
    2 Brown 3 1
    3 Moore 5 1
    4 Whitehead 5 2
    . . . .
    . . . .

COB (Country of birth) and Sex are codes.

I want to create a report that tallies the Country of Birth and calculates
the percentage. In the above case the report should look like -

    COB Count Percentage
    5 3 75%
    3 1 25%
    Total 4 100%

    Sex Count Percentage
    1 2 50%
    2 2 50%
    Total 4 100%

Can this be done in the Alpha Five Reports ?

Sorry about the alignment, can't seemed to get it right no matter what font
    I used.

    Thanks.

    Hi Lim,

    You ask
Can this be done in the Alpha Five Reports ?
The answer is, yes it can.

It is just a question of doing the math. Probably with a Summarize operation first.

Can you post a sample of what you have done so far.

Lim, you can lock down the alignment of your text if you surround the text with CODE delimiters. Use the "Go Advanced" button to open a more advanced message editor. The toolbar has buttons that will do this for you if you select the text to be locked down first, and then click the button. -- tom

Thanks Tom for the format advice. I have redone the posting here as you suggested.

        Keith,

The following is all I have got for now. Are you able to provide sample
code or procedure based on this ?

When the report runs, it should produce the tallies and report as per below.....

        Thanks.

             Total 4 100%

I did not mean for you to repost your question.

Tom's advice for lining up text was for future questions that you might post here on the forum.

I would like to help you but would like to see what you have done for yourself.

            Lim,

How are blank records to be handled, both for COB and for sex?

              Hi Tom,

Good question. We will need to assume that they are compulsory fields and
              always contain a value.

              Thanks.

                Hi Keith,

Not sure what more info you need as this is where I am at the moment.

Your suggestion of using the summarize operation worked and it is exactly what I needed...but unless I am wrong, it seemed to generate a new result table for COB. If I want Sex tally, another summarize operation will need to be created to generate the Sex result table. I will end up with two tables.
This leads me to the next question - if two results table are generated, can I put both tables in one report ??? If so, how to ?????

                Thanks.

                    Hi Lim,

if two results table are generated, can I put both tables in one report ???
Answer, no, but the report will be built onto a separate table. This will give you a number of choices to build the report on.
(1)Join the two tables, to make a third table.
(2)Create a new table and post or append the values from the other two tables into this table. You may want to Zap the table before posting.
(3)Build and run a script as Stan has shown to write the data into this third table.
I hope now you can get the report you wanted, I knew you could do it.

                          Hi Stan,

Looks like you are the man to cut code...!

Say there is an additional field called Date of Birth (DOB) and I wish to
pick up records for the date of birth between 2 dates before generating the tally report.

I envisaged I can create a form or a Dialog box to enter the start and end date
                          before executing your "create" program.

Also the "Country of Birth" code is 4 numerics instead of 1 alphabet. This seemed to change your code considerably ?

                          Thanks.

                          Regards,

                          Lim
