Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    need helop with code

    im not great at code, but i do try. i have got stuck with this

    Code:
    dim tc as P
    dim tbl as P
    dim task_done as l

    tc = table.current()
    tbl = table.open("track")

    query.filter = "Caseref=" + quote(tc.caseref) + ".AND. (Task_done)=.F."

    query.order = ""
    query.options  = ""

    qry = tbl.query_create()
    nrecs = qry.records_get()

    IF nrecs = 1 then
        tbl.change_begin()
        tbl.Task_done=.t.
        tbl.Task_end=date()
        tbl.change_end(.T.)
    End if

    qry.drop()
    query.filter = ""
    query.order = ""
    query.options  = ""

    tbl.close()
    i need to cycle through all child records in a table called 'track' to the current parent record. i only need those records where a task is incomplete 'task_done=.F.' and i wish to change all of those selected records to 'task_done=.T.'

    the event is fired when a user selects 'case cancelled' from a combo.

    thnaks again.

    Sample tables make it a lot easier to debug scripts like this.

      Hi Richard,

      Have you tried to do this with Operations, Record Update?

      It is so much easier than fiddling around with code. If the result is not right, you can re-run with another update to change the field value.

        hi tom,

        there is a sample here http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al...ad.php?t=75966

        post 7.

        it is a few months old, but should be in order. the parent table is 'casefile' child table is 'track'

        user name richard harris
        password direct

        i have used similiar code in my program already and ammended it for this new purpose, but for some reason it wont work.

        here is the original code.

        Code:
        dim tc as P
        dim tbl as P

        tc = table.current()
        tbl = table.open("track")

        query.filter = "Caseref=" + quote(tc.caseref) + ".AND. alltrim(Task_group)='File Check'"
        query.order = ""
        query.options  = ""

        qry = tbl.query_create()
        nrecs = qry.records_get()

        IF nrecs = 1 then
            tbl.change_begin()
            tbl.Task_done=.t.
            tbl.Task_end=date()
            tbl.change_end(.T.)
        End if

        qry.drop()
        query.filter = ""
        query.order = ""
        query.options  = ""

        tbl.close()
        hope this helps.

        thanks

          keith,

          never thought of that. i have been using update operation all throught out the data import (from access) and data cleansing.

          ill see how this post gets on first, then maybe try that.

            change the indicated portion only.

            Code:
            IF nrecs = 1 THEN
            	tbl.fetch_first()
            	WHILE .not. tbl.fetch_eof()
            		tbl.change_begin()
            		tbl.Task_done=.t.
            		tbl.Task_end=date()
            		tbl.change_end(.T.)
            		tbl.fetch_next()
            	END WHILE
            END IF
            There can be only one.

              thanks stan,

              its still not working for me, i am not getting any errors when the event is fired, but the records are not changing.

              im a little stuck.

              the other script works just fine and the only difference here is the field which is filtered.

              the forms where both scripts are fired use the same set.

                I just threw in the while loop in without thinking through the issue.

                What you want is if nrecs > 0 not nrecs = 1

                IF nrecs > 0 THEN
                There can be only one.

                    stan,

                    thanks very much. worked great.

                    is the difference between the two codes because

                    nrecs=1 (in the script i used this code, there will only ever be 1 record)
                    nrecs>0 (there could be more than 1 record)

                    thanks again

                      Re: need helop with code

                      Richard, in this case it probably makes no difference, but if "task_done" is a field name, then don't use it as a variable name in the same script. Object names throughout Alpha Five must be unique. Duplicate names leads to trouble. - tom

                        thanks tom,

                        it wasnt there originally, but i kept getting an error in the interactive screen saying the variable couldnt be found. so i added it. i was trying different syntax, so that was maybe the cause.

                        i will remove it.

                        keith,

                        the form is fcaCaseTrack
