Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Conditional Text

    How would I go about making a warning text appear next to a field when the date is expired?

    Code:
    if(exp_date=<date(),"Expired","")
    is my thought, however when I make a field and make it conditional showing this, nothing happens. I must be on the wrong path.....again...;)

    Hi Kevin,

    Put the text into a conditional object next to the Date field.

      Hi Keith,
      I keep trying that. I make a conditional object, insert the "if" code and I get blank.

        Hi Kevin,

        You dont need to have an If statement for a conditional object.

        Have a look at the Invoice form in Alphasports. Payment method.

          you could also make a form level calc field with your expression rather than a conditional object. put no border on the field and it will only show if the condition is met

            Re: Conditional Text

            Kevin, have you worked through the example in the help file topic "Creating and Using a Conditional Object"? Notice that none of the expressions used to define which layer (level) of the conditional object is displayed contain IF() statements. The conditional object itself is one big if statement. Each level (layer) of the co is displayed when it's condition expression evaluates to true. Suggest you work through the help file example step by step. Doing something instead of just reading about it often helps, at least it does for me. -- tom

              Thanks Tom, I am looking at that as well as playing around with the "if()" in other areas.

                You're welcome. The example will help you.

                In my previous post maybe it would have been clearer if I had said it this way:

                A given level (layer) of the co is displayed only if it's condition expression evaluates to true.

                  Re: Conditional Text

                  Ok, Condition Expression = Ffl_Exp_Date<=date()
                  Label = Expired

                  But nothing shows up as text whether expired or not. I must be missing something.

                    Re: Conditional Text

                    Yes.

                    If you leave a layer of the CO empty, when it displays you see zippo.

                    Use the form designer to drop a field or text into each layer. Use whatever you want to display when that layer's conditional expression is true.

                    the "label" is just a name for a layer in the CO. The label does not display.

                    -- tom

                    ps. Your question reveals that you did not actually follow the example in the help system to conclusion, you bad boy, you.

                      Arggg... Made the co then dropped the field with the calculation onto it and nothing... Created a text saying Expired and put it onto the co and nothing changes...

                        Hi Kevin,

                        Can you post a sample of your app here, a CO is very simple to set up and it wont take to long to show you how its done.

                        Do you have Skype?

                        I have added file for you to see CO on form.

                          Here's an example that pops up my favorite text if the "State" field contains "FL".

                          Kevin, perhaps you're dropping your text in the wrong layer (level) of the CO.

                            Hopefully not to confuse the issue any further but a simple character or text field could be used as well with a condition (if-then) placed say on the OnInit, OnFetch of the form and/or on the OnChange of a field if the value can change whilst on the form, whatever is needed....

                            Code:
                            if exp_date=<date() then
                                char_field.value="Expired"
                                char_field.object.visible=.T. 'if wanted to hide/unhide the object--could use color as well
                              else
                                char_field.value=""
                                char_field.object.visible=.F.
                            end if
