Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    internet question

I have a client with maybe 12 locations. They want to give users the ability to make a connection to the web, but be able to absolutely restrict what they can access, as per specific websites - namely to check for Medicaid and insurance eligibility.

If they even try to check their email (or any website not listed,) they would be blocked.

Does anyone know of software that would manage that?

Do a Goggle on Proxy Server Software. You will find several free and commercial apps that will detail what the packages can do and how they work which should get you up to speed on what will fit your clients specs.

        Martin:

I've done this for our customers to do online eligibility checking. I call IE but restrict the features that are made available to the user.

Let me see if I can dig out the code ..

        F.

        Later ...
Actually we don't really allow them to launch an IE session directly. We work though our proprietary eligibility checking service which outputs an xml/html page with the specific patient eligibility data. I save that information to a file then launch IE (with navigation etc disabled) to present the file to the user. That probably won't work for you.

You may even be able to do this at the router/firewall level. Here is a snapshot of the URL filter page from my Draytek modem/router.

that looks promising, except that they have no router, as they are stand-a-lone with a dial up connection

also, the blacklist would have to be *.*, excepting the white list

Dialup?? whats that:) I thought only us backward countries still had dialup.

Maybe you could do the same with a software firewall, although the proxy software idea sounds more promising.

Yep - client lives at the edge of StoneAge. They are still using 4.5!!

An IT guy at another of my clients said he thinks is possible at a browser level, and is looking at for me.

If I ever get it to work, will post here the solution.

                    Re: internet question

This is possible using some tom-foolery and funky network configuration.

Disable DNS lookups by deleting the DNS server entries in the network configuration.

Configure Domain lookups to use the LMHosts file. Then only enter the dns / Ip configurations into the lmhosts filie based on what websites / email accounts you want people to be able to access.

The limitations are that access is only denied based on a failed domain name lookup. If the user knows the actual IP address they can bypass this limitation.

This might be difficult to deploy because the dial-up account typically pushes DHCP configuration to the dial-up client.

                      Re: internet question

Another way to approach this and to provide a stepping stone for when the client does upgrade to broadband.

IPCop is a linux based software firewall solution. www.ipcop.org

If your comfortable with linux you can deploy a ipcop machine that uses dial-up networking to connect to the internet. Once the client upgrades to broadband the ipcop can be upgraded as well and continue to serve as a network wide firewall.

The benefit of the ipcop box is that it will allow you to configure white and black lists for accessing the internet. Anything possible with linux is possible with the IPCop.

The software is free and almost any computer you have lying around can run ipcop.
