Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

      Saha --

If you use Terminal Services, you will have to use a Windows Server OS or Windows XP pro as your server. Disadvantage of Windows XP pro is that only one user can be logged on. Advantage of Windows Server is that multiple users can be logged on and support is better for printing & file transfers.

An alternative is to use LogMeIn, which is cheaper and does not require the user on the server to log off. However, Terminal Services allows you to print remotely and transfer files more easily than LogMeIn.

In your application, I would use one form for the head office and a different form for the factory, both based on the same tables. Make sure you have a version of A5 that allows multiple simultaneous users.

          Dont even think about it.

The only other choice is a web application.

              Re: remote database for desktop

I have a client that uses two versions of a desktop booking system with remote database hosted on an ISP. One set for the concierges at various hotels and one set for retrieving and updating bookings at a game reserve. This is not very costly to implement.

I just want to make certain that semantics or a language barrier is not getting in the way here...
now if it is possible to use the same tables in two different locations?
Keith is, I'm certain, referring to having the tables in two different physical locations. If the word "in" was intentional, then agree with Keith of course--synchronization would be difficult, if not impossible between the two databases. But if saha meant to be able to use the same tables from two different locations, then the answer is yes.

                    I assume you mean proceed?

I also assume you have the same application running in two locations, Office and Factory. As Mike has said "synchronization would be difficult".

In which direction do you want to go, Web application or Remote access?

My choice is Ms server with terminal server. 1 database, 1 program to load. 1 program to update. You can limit easy when and where users can access TS. The client computer can be old window 98, ME or brand new computers & you wil have the speed of the server at every client.

Two years ago I started using TS. I wish I had done it way sooner. I use TS not just for Alpha but 4 other programs we all use. I feel this the only way to go. Only drawback is the start up cost of the Server hardware, licenses & being a MS server.

I have used the following software. It is reasonably priced and I have recommended it to several clients.
It has a 14 day trial
