Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Record_Add() Function and strings

    Hi all,

    I am struggling with this and was hoping another pair of eyes could see what was wrong or how I might get this to work. The scenario is that I am trying to copy a record from one table to an identical structural table - but two of the field values need changed from what the values are in the source table.

    Code:
    dim gvnewuser as c
    gvnewuser="Beckie"
    dim tblsrc as p
    tblsrc=table.open("mastermenu",FILE_RW_SHARED)
    tblsrc.fetch_last()

    fstr=<<%str%
    Menuuidf=alltrim(tblsrc.Menuuidf)+gvnewuser)
    Menulvl1f=tblsrc.Menulvl1f
    Menu1ordf=tblsrc.Menu1ordf
    Menulvl2f=tblsrc.Menulvl2f
    Menu2ordf=tblsrc.Menu2ordf
    Menulvl3f=tblsrc.Menulvl3f
    Menu3ordf=tblsrc.Menu3ordf
    Ctrlpnlnmf=tblsrc.Ctrlpnlnmf
    Ctrlpnltypf=tblsrc.Ctrlpnltypf
    L1clsdpicf=tblsrc.L1clsdpicf
    L1openpicf=tblsrc.L1openpicf
    L1clsdtxtf=tblsrc.L1clsdtxtf
    L1opentxtf=tblsrc.L1opentxtf
    L2clsdpicf=tblsrc.L2clsdpicf
    L2opentxtf=tblsrc.L2opentxtf
    L3picf=tblsrc.L3picf
    L3txtf=tblsrc.L3txtf
    Userf = gvnewuser
    %str%

    vresult = record_add("dynamicmenu",eval(fstr),1)
    Attached is the error message I am getting using eval(). I have tried evaluate_template() as well with no joy. If I don't use eval() the record is added fine but it is the literal text of what is to the right of the equal sign and not the field value that is being referenced.

    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Regards.

    Jeff

    Re: Record_Add() Function and strings

    Well...I accomplished what I wanted pretty easily another way.....although I would still like to know if the post above could work.

    The simple code I used is.....brain dead today I guess....should have just went this way in the beginning.

    HTML Code:
    dim gvnewuser as c
    gvnewuser="Beckie"
    dim tblsrc as p
    tblsrc=table.open("mastermenu",FILE_RW_SHARED)
    tblsrc.fetch_last()

    dim tbltrgt as p
    tbltrgt=table.open("dynamicmenu",FILE_RW_SHARED)

    tbltrgt.enter_begin()
    tbltrgt.Menuuidf=alltrim(tblsrc.Menuuidf)+gvnewuser
    tbltrgt.Menulvl1f=tblsrc.Menulvl1f
    tbltrgt.Menu1ordf=tblsrc.Menu1ordf
    tbltrgt.Menulvl2f=tblsrc.Menulvl2f
    tbltrgt.Menu2ordf=tblsrc.Menu2ordf
    tbltrgt.Menulvl3f=tblsrc.Menulvl3f
    tbltrgt.Menu3ordf=tblsrc.Menu3ordf
    tbltrgt.Ctrlpnlnmf=tblsrc.Ctrlpnlnmf
    tbltrgt.Ctrlpnltypf=tblsrc.Ctrlpnltypf
    tbltrgt.L1clsdpicf=tblsrc.L1clsdpicf
    tbltrgt.L1openpicf=tblsrc.L1openpicf
    tbltrgt.L1clsdtxtf=tblsrc.L1clsdtxtf
    tbltrgt.L1opentxtf=tblsrc.L1opentxtf
    tbltrgt.L2clsdpicf=tblsrc.L2clsdpicf
    tbltrgt.L2opentxtf=tblsrc.L2opentxtf
    tbltrgt.L3picf=tblsrc.L3picf
    tbltrgt.L3txtf=tblsrc.L3txtf
    tbltrgt.Userf = gvnewuser

    tbltrgt.enter_end()

      Re: Record_Add() Function and strings

      Or.

      Code:
      dim record_data as B
      dim target as P
      dim gvnewuser as c
      gvnewuser="Beckie"
      dim tblsrc as p
      tblsrc=table.open("mastermenu",FILE_RW_SHARED)
      tblsrc.fetch_last()
      record_data = tblsrc.record_data_get()

      target = table.open("dynamicmenu")
      target.enter_begin()
      target.record_data_set(record_data)
      target.Menuuidf=alltrim(tblsrc.Menuuidf)+gvnewuser
      target.Userf = gvnewuser
      target.enter_end(.T.)
      target.close()
      tblsrc.close()
      There can be only one.

        Re: Record_Add() Function and strings

        Was just going to reply and saw you found another way but to make your initial code work you would have needed to preprocess the list and just use fstr in the function (no eval etc)
        The fact that the literal text on the right side of the '=' was being used is a clue. If that is what it wants then that is what you give it. :)
        Code:
        im gvnewuser as c
        gvnewuser="Beckie"
        dim tblsrc as p
        tblsrc=table.open("mastermenu",FILE_RW_SHARED)
        tblsrc.fetch_last()

        fstr=""
        fstr=fstr+"Menuuidf="+alltrim(tblsrc.Menuuidf)+gvnewuser) + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"Menulvl1f="+tblsrc.Menulvl1f + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"Menu1ordf="+tblsrc.Menu1ordf + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"Menulvl2f="+tblsrc.Menulvl2f + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"Menu2ordf="+tblsrc.Menu2ordf + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"Menulvl3f="+tblsrc.Menulvl3f + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"Menu3ordf="+tblsrc.Menu3ordf + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"Ctrlpnlnmf="+tblsrc.Ctrlpnlnmf + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"Ctrlpnltypf="+tblsrc.Ctrlpnltypf + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"L1clsdpicf="+tblsrc.L1clsdpicf + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"L1openpicf="+tblsrc.L1openpicf + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"L1clsdtxtf="+tblsrc.L1clsdtxtf + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"L1opentxtf="+tblsrc.L1opentxtf + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"L2clsdpicf="+tblsrc.L2clsdpicf + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"L2opentxtf="+tblsrc.L2opentxtf + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"L3picf="+tblsrc.L3picf + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"L3txtf="+tblsrc.L3txtf + crlf()
        fstr=fstr+"Userf ="+ gvnewuser

        vresult = record_add("dynamicmenu",fstr,1)

            This one is similar to Stan's
            Code:
            dim target as P
            dim gvnewuser as c
            gvnewuser="Beckie"
            dim tblsrc as p
            tblsrc=table.open("mastermenu",FILE_RW_SHARED)
            tblsrc.fetch_last()

            target = table.open("dynamicmenu")
            target.enter_begin()
            property_recurse_assign(target,tblsrc)
            target.Menuuidf=alltrim(tblsrc.Menuuidf)+gvnewuser
            target.Userf = gvnewuser
            target.enter_end(.T.)
            target.close()
            tblsrc.close()
            Will have to run the two of them through Ira's code utility one of these days to see if there is speed difference.

              Or even the extra paren that most likely is the "extra character" in the list..

              fstr=<<%str%
              Menuuidf=alltrim(tblsrc.Menuuidf)+gvnewuser)
