Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re-sorting a record list

I am new at Alpha and trying to figure out how I can best change the sort order of a record selection. We have drivers that follow a specific route based on a daily printed list of addresses. We reqularly get additional stops that now requires to be slotted in based on where it will fit in on the route. I use a sort field with a numeric value. If we originally had 25 stops for the day and we now have an additional 2 stops to slot in at number 12 and 23 how can I best modify and save the new daily list of addresses with the updated sort order sequence. I keep a customer file with addresses and the sort order based on a specific date and then post it to a daily transaction file where I view it in a browse before printing. I was hoping to use something similar to allocating the tab order functionality on a form to modify the sort order prior to printing the list. I would really appreciate some ideas and tricks to solve this problem

Do you have a field in the daily transaction file that can hold the "sort number" for each address record on a route?

Do you use the daily transaction file for more than one driver (i.e. for more than one route)?

      Hi,

This is an interesting one, which I will follow.

If we originally had 25 stops for the day and we now have an additional 2 stops to slot in at number 12 and 23 how can I best modify and save the new daily list of addresses with the updated sort order sequence.
If Mrs Jones has been given slot 12 and now Mrs Smith is given slot 12, does that mean now Mrs Jones has slot 13?

        Re: Re-sorting a record list

I did something similar for a friend a while back. He was delivering home shopping magazines and the addresses needed to be in custom order to suit a walking route. The addresses were assigned to different Distributors(similar to your drivers) and ordered on an order field. The end result was to print out personalized labels in the correct order so the magazines were in the order of the route.

It is pretty basic and I have not looked at it for a while(friend no longer delivers them). There is an auto order check box that when check and a new record saved automatically resorts the list for a particular distributor. a You can also change the order by setting the desired position of the address in question.

I am in the middle of some thing at the moment so may not respond right away to questions but will do my best.

Hope this at least gives some ideas.
