Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Question about speed

    G.Gabriel:
I watched the video, this is coooool. But...... don't know how to replicate it. If you could give some explanation, it would be great.

    CALocklin:
no, there is no common value, imagine a table with just 4 fields: Serial#, First Name, Last Name, Booking#.
The purpose of Marking is to be able to insert a booking# (the same for the marked records) using an update action. The purpose is to tag the selected records somehow either by marking them or by inserting a common value in the booking# field like "requested" and when the airline replies with a booking nbr (like BXM951) I run an update operation replacing "requested" with BXM951. I tried hard to find a way to do the following: highlight 4 or 5 consecutive rows, tell A5 to insert "requested in the Booking# field in the selected records but couldn't.

      Even cooler...
Almost there. Just adding some more bells and whistles:

A-Ability to take any highlighted records and do whatever you want to do with them:
      1-Export them
      2-delete them
3-Run a report showing only these records
4-Re-filter the browse to only show these records

      B-Add new records:
1-As duplicate to the highlighted ones
2-New records with selected fields with similar values

For now, I got some shopping to do..

        Re: Question about speed

Not trying to take anything away from what Gabe is working on (it sounds pretty neat if he gets it working) but this might be another alternative.

I'm not sure if this would be any better than marking a record. In fact, it could be used to mark the record so it's really more of a twist on what you're already working on. It sounds like you're already working in an embedded browse so you could create an On Double Click action to mark the record or to put "requested" in a field. I haven't done this yet but I think I would put the field on the main form even if it's hidden. Then the user would double click the desired line in the browse and the OnDoubleClick event would run code something like this: (off the top of my head so minor adjustments may be req'd)
        Code:
        parentform:myfield.text = "requested"
        parentform.commit()
I believe this should happen as fast as the user could double click the line.

Sure is better that marking records, the big advantage of your approach is it allows to tag non consecutive records; this is
          Thank you.

            Cal:
I hope the atached video didn't lead you to believe that I was selecting each row by itself. I am not. I am highlighting the records by holding and dragging the mouse. No double-clicking which many, myself included, don't like. Surely, it's a lot easier and convenient to hold and drag the mouse as opposed to double click each and every row you wish to include.

Also, I am not marking any records. As I mentioned earlier, I don't like marking records.

Alpha has a function: current_highlighted records() but it doesn't seem to do anything (haven't spent anytime on it lately, but others report so). This is an alternative to this malfunctioning function and then some.

Highlighting records (then updating them, the subject of this thread) by dragging the mouse will highlight consequetive records. What I have done so far more than suffice for that. But then I thought what if someone wants to highlight records that are not consequetive?

Well that's a bit extra. Why do people always ask for extra?

I plan on doing that also without the annoying dbl-click. But that's for another day.

              G Gabriel:
From your video it was very clear that records were being tagged as you dragged down/highlighted the rows, which is exactly what i am looking for. Cal's approach becomes handy in case I need to tag a record that is a few rows up or down the pack. So if I can combine both approaches, it would be fantastic.
