Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    calculated field delay using tablesum()

    Still trying to find my feet with A5. Have the following problem. We generate a daily list of jobs that needs to be actioned. We can remove a job from this daily list. Each job has a value associated with it. We would like to see the projected turnover for the day by totalling all the jobs on the list.

    I have an embedded browse (parent - child 1:m relationship) with a checkbox on a column (Print_Indicator, logical field). I have a calculated field that is defined as

    Code:
    vtotal = tablesum("service list","Service_List->Print_Indicator = .t.","Service_List->Standard_Service_Fee")
    Example. I have 3 jobs listed for the day valued at $100, $200 and $300.When the form renders the total is displayed correctly, $700. When I unmark the first job ($100) the total remains at $700. When I unmark the second job ($200) the total changes to $600 (only then subtracting the first job $100).

    I assume that somewhere I need to do a refresh of some sort. I will really appreciate some assistance

    This may be an issue with actually committing the changes. When you unmark the first record and click back onto the main form, does the caclulated field value change? If so, the unmarking of the check box is not being committed to the table referenced in the tablesum() until you leave the browse row. Alpha doesn't know you are through with your changes to that record until you leave it.

      Hi Stan
      When I click on the form the total remain unchanged. It does however change if I click anywhere else within the browse as well as on the calculated variable

        By on the form I really meant to activate a field on the form, thus saving the change to the row in the browse. What is happening is that the tablesum() is looking at the service_list table outside of the context of the form and the table values don't change until the record is saved.

          Is there a way to get the record to commit prior to the variable refresh

            What do you want to happen when?

            Everything happens in response to an event.

              Hi Stan
              Come from an 4GL procedural code environment and very new to object orientated environment. I basically would like with the onclick event within the browse column to refresh the variable. I have tried to do this in the onrowchange event of the browse but doesn't seem to work. I don't know how to manipulate the onclick event of the check box in the browse. Hope you can make sense of this

                The calculated value is already changing when you "click anywhere else within the browse". No need to code the onrowchange event, is there?

                If you want to have the calculated value change when you click the logical toggle, take a look at my sample. I tried to construct a similar situation, changed the browse column to have a button rather than a checkbox, ....

                Unzip the sample to a new directory, open Alpha, navigate to that directory, create a new database, add the tables and set to the database. Open the one form, change to the second parent record, try the buttons in the browse.
