Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Cannot add Alpha .dbf files into database

    Hi All,

A customer, who is still on Alpha Five Version 1, provided me with a copy of their database so I can upgrade to Version 9 for them. I created a new Alpha Five Version 9 database on my machine and tried to add the dbf files into my database (I first copied these files into the folder where I created the new Alpha database project). Only about 4 out of maybe 25 files were added. I didn't receive any error messages. I don't know why only a few were added but the others weren't.

From what I read Version 9 should be able to add the files as long as they are in dbf format. I shouldn't have to convert the files first or anything like that. I really want to avoid going through an export/import routine for each of these files.

Is there a reason or reasons why Alpha won't add these files to my V9 database? What am I missing that's preventing me from doing something that would appear to be simple?

    Thanks,
    BobA

I may be wrong on this, but I vaguely recall you need to do the conversion in like version 5, and then move to later versions. are there any memo fields in the adb that go with the dbfs - right now I don't remember the extension for the alpha dos extensions for the memos - if you don't have an earlier version, you can send the files to me and I will convert and send back - in the meantime maybe someone will confirm my vague recollection and remember the extension for the old memos

Thanks for your feedback; however, the files appear to have been converted from Alpha Four to Alpha Five, if they ever were.

That's really the issue. The files are in Alpha Five format yet Alpha Five Version 9 won't add them, except for 3 or 4 tables. I don't know what the difference is between the few tables that do get added and the many that don't. Something is preventing these tables from being added but I no idea what it could be.

BobA, I wonder if the misbehaving tables have memo fields? If so, are you making the files which contain memo field text available to vers 9? Memo field text is NOT contained in the DBF files. -- tom

Re: Cannot add Alpha .dbf files into database

            Hi Tom,

Yes, I see .FPT files in the windows folder, which is the file type for memo fields. I have the .dbf and related files together in my project folder. So nothing is missing.

Re: Cannot add Alpha .dbf files into database

BobA, is FPT the file type extension applicable to vers 1 memo field files?

Can you add the data to any version of Alpha Five other than vers 9?

Re: Cannot add Alpha .dbf files into database

Bob sent me a sample and together we discovered the problem he was having.

Vers 9 was having trouble opening the Vers 1 dictionaries.

The Vers 1 tables were "ADDed" just fine once the related dictionaries were deleted from the Vers 9 database folder.

Re: Cannot add Alpha .dbf files into database

If there's a lot of stuff you really want from those dictionaries, it's possible to get them by upgrading in steps. I think you have to go to A5v5 first (v4?) then to a higher version. I still have versions 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 on my system if you need them converted.

On the other hand, it may be better to just keep the old copy in A5v1 to reference field rules and code logic while rebuilding it in a more appropriate method in v9. That assumes, of course, that you have a full version of A5v1 so you can get the original into design mode. (On second thought, I think the full version was all they had in v1!?)
