Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    List View with Progressive Lookup

Too cold to play in the snow, so I am playing with this xdialog, which isn't working for me. I am trying to follow the directions from the help file with the given title listed above. The code below does not work. I am not sure where I am going wrong. Is there a difference in lastname and Lastname? Is that the name of a field or the name of a variable?

I created a variable called vname in the initial step of the "List View Control".

Seems like the Help file works better when you know what you are doing...

    Code:
    left(lastname, len(:argLastname)) = :argLastname
Thanks for looking. Happy New Year!

    Hi Pete,

Have you looked at the ProgressiveFind in Alpha Sports, code tab?

Also, it might help, if you do a search in the forum with "Progressive".

There are several examples with different variations of the original code from Jim Chapman.

Pete, I found the example you mention and have attached something for you to explore while the storm howls outside.

You will find two example scripts on the Code page of the control panel.

LV_Example uses a listview control to permit the user to select a customer lastname. [ I used the customer table from AlphaSports ] Notice that it does not use a text box to collect input from the user.

LV_Example2 is the example from the help file. Here the user types a partial last name into the text box, and the listview control dynamically filters itself as the user types.

      Code:
      left(lastname, len(:argLastname)) = :argLastname
"lastname" is a field name in the table
"argLastname" is the name of the argument that gets defined while specifying the choices for the listview control

        Tom:
Took a quick look at your second example and I see where I went wrong. I will see if I can do this correctly myself. It's 6 degrees out! Where's Al Gore when we really need him? :)

        Thanks for the help...

Re: List View with Progressive Lookup

It seems that the Progressive Lookup runs slowly when there are a lot of records attached to it. I have created about 6000 records to use for the lookup. Is this a normal issue or am I not doing something correctly to make this work smoothly and quickly? Could it be an indexing problem?

Has anyone had success with the PL using tables with many records?

          Thanks.

            Hi Pete,

I have just run a test on 30,000 records, it took about 2 seconds to load the dialog and the filter was instant. That was using the Jim's PL code.

It would probably have been faster if I had used one of the fields with an index on it.

I suggest you give it a try.

                Keith:
I am obviously doing something wrong, as I recall doing Jim Chapman's PL a while back (V8) and not having issues with speed. So, when I get some time, I will play with it some more and see if I can get it correctly. Thanks for checking on the speed issue.

Re: List View with Progressive Lookup

The speed issue is fixed by setting up the ListView properly, i.e. in the Data selection "Populate method" selecting "Dynamically Bound".
I have mentioned this previously here
