Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Desktop Runtime And restricted Users

Here is what i would Like to do.

Build a 15 user desktop runtime application on a internal server.

Allow only certain Employee's to have access to parts of the application.

Allow a end user to be the administrator of the application in order to change an employee's access and also add and delete employee's from the list.

I realize that this can be done using the security feature built into alpha 5v9 full version. I was looking into a runtime version which I believe once it is setup and used as runtime the ability to change these settings are only available in the full version, not the runtime.

Anyone have a good way of doing this without writing it in Xbasic?
An example would also be very helpful.

    Thanks Still a Newbie

    Hi Mark,

You can do just what you want but I'm afraid you will need to do some XBasic.

Create a form, lets call it Security. Put a button on that form and edit it with XBasic, now here is the tough bit. Type ina5_user_groups_dialog() and thats it. Now the administrator can control who has access to what in the application. It will still mean that, you as the developer will have to setup the user rights in the first place.

I would recommend that the Security form is only available from another form which is controlled by a password.

Once you have setup the security, check out these two functions in the Interactive Window.
    user_groups()
    user_name()

I have this in use on a 40 user network.

      Thanks Keith

I will look into this although I'm not that far into the development yet.
Does this mean the end user cannot add or remove users to the security form?
Or are you just stating that some users would have to be set up as a start?

      Thanks again

        Yes.

No, only the Administrator must be setup in security. All other users can be added later.

This is probably the same as Keith is saying. An end user can be defined in the Administrator group. Then that end user can define new users and groups and make assignments. (Of course creating new groups does not make much sense if the developer has not used that group.)

If a user pushes the button for the user/groups dialog, and is not defined in the Administrators group, Alpha automatically denys them and displays a message.

I generally do not give an end user the ability to log on as the master user, with the master password. This means they can't remove database security.

          Bill.

            Thanks Bill and Keith

I guess what I was trying to accomplish was to allow someone besides myself to remove or add employee's from the list of users. Also allow them to change their access to different forms. since I don't work there and would rather not be called to make changes if I don't have to. Since in todays business's employee's role's in the business change often.

            Thanks again

Yes, that is what I said you can do, er, an end user can do. You as developer will set access to layouts, etc. based upon security groups you define, e.g. accounting, personnell, administrator etc. You will also define (at least) one user in the administrator group. Now that (administrator) user has access to the A5 users and groups dialog. That user can create other users and assign them to groups, e.g. accounting, personnell, etc. Of course what groups exist will be a function of what you want to create.
