Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Change modeless window to modal

    Is there a function that can change the mode of a form that is already opened in modeless window to a modal window (the user cannot work in any other window in A5, or make selections from the menu, or toolbar) and a function to change it back to modeless. I know you can open a form in modal window, but in my case the form is already open in modeless window. I can't use From.View() or Form.Dialog() because they would open a second instance of a form that is already open.

    I am sure there are several way to do this. I haven't tried this myself but for example you could try using the form "Data_Entry_Style" property.

    Whether the form should use the "System default", "Modal", or "Modeless" data entry styles, set the form's property thus:

    :formname.data_entry_style (as type C) = "Modal"

      Re: Change modeless window to modal

      Hi Brett:
      Modal/modeless data entry style and modal/modeless window are not the same. In a modal window the user cannot do anything else (like open any other form or use the menu) except work in the current window. It is only after he has closed the modal window that he can do other things in A5. A modal window ca have a modeless data entry style.

      I am trying to find a method/way to change the mode of a window from modeless to modal and from modal to modeless. It seems that this attribute is inseparable form the open form action.

        Not sure why you would want to do it, but one way that might work would be to use <form>.swap() to alternate between two copies of the same form, one modal and one modeless.

          Re: Change modeless window to modal

          Hello Dr Wayne:
          I am precisely using "Swap Form" action to alternate between the 2 forms:
          I have 2 forms: FormA where user cannot enter/delete/modify and a formB where user can only enter/modify record. I am using "Swap Form" in action scripting to switch between the 2. A button on FormA to switch to FormB and a button on FormB to switch back to FormA. My problem is:
          - if FormA is open as modeless window and I click on the button to switch to FormB, FormB is in modelss window; I can keep working in A5 while FormB is still open, that's precisely what I want to avoid.
          - if FormA is open in Modal window, the problem is I cannot do anything else like querry navigate, etc..., however when I switch to FormB, the window is modal which is what I want.
          If there is a function/method that can change a form from modeless to modal, I could put in the button on FormA 2 actions: switch to FormB, change mode to modal window. The button on Form B would have similar actions: Swich to FormA, change mode to modeless.

            Re: Change modeless window to modal

            If swap form won't work, you can still alternate between the two forms.
            Let's say you have two forms, FormA, which you use for navigation, and FormB, which you're using only for data entry.
            Your modeless FormA can have a button that does this:

            f=form.zoom_to_record("FormB","dialog")
            parentform.close() ' closes FormA

            Now you should be in FormB and if it's modal, you can't leave it for anything else.

            When you leave FormB, you have a button that does this:
            f=form.load("FormA")
            f.show()
            f.activate()
            parentform.close()

            or, if you prefer,
            f=form.zoom_to_record("FormA","form")
            parentform.close()

            which will load FormA and close FormB.
            You can also synchronize FormA and FormB to the same record using the base table's filter_expression and order_expression (to prevent navigation), or query syntax (which allows navigation), as in
            f=form.load("FormB")
            f:Tables:customer.filter_expression="custID='00011'"
            f:Tables:customer.order_expression="custID"
            f:Tables.customer.query()
            ' prevent moving off this record or deleting it
            f.restrict_navigation=.t.
            f.restrict_enter=.t.
            f.restrict_delete=.t.
            f.show()
            f.activate()

            You can do almost anything you want with the alternate form before you display it.
            Hope this helps.

              Gaby, I don't think you can do this without closing the current form and re-opening it as dialog. An alternative would be to open a second form as dialog. Here's an example of the latter approach. -- tom

                Thank you both for your input. I'll study the 2 approaches.
