Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

grid size on forms -- NOT WEB COMPONENTS

I have probably missed something along the way (over the years); but cannot
find any way to set up the grid size on a form in the preferences section.

I have seen references to grid size for HTML forms and web components, but
that is not what I am presently trying to find.

If there is not a way to set grid size from the preferences section,, is there
any other way to set grid size so that each form created will have the same
grid size AUTOMATICALLY????? OR ..... some way to set form grid properties
with an 'A5.' or 'A5_' command line.

    thanx for any help

With form in design mode click on form in the upper menu and then select grid - that is where you can change the grid size.

thanx Tom, but that means that for each of the 30 or 40 forms I need, I must
INDIVIDUALLY set the grid for EACH form.

What I want is a way to change the default value that comes up when you
choose "Form/Grid", so that ALL forms in the database have the proper grid
      as they are created.

Anyone got any ideas????? OR is it just an unchangeable default value????

Usually, most default values can be changed somewhere by some command?

It appears to me that once it is changed, it remains changed until you change it again. I can open, close, create forms and the grid size does not change from what I have it set to. Is this not the case on your system?

As Bill pointed out, once you change it for one form it is set for all forms until you change it again.

Well, I must have some other system then................

I changed the grid size on a form. Tried a new form - same old grid size (10).

Then I changed the grid size on ALL of the forms in the adb.... Made a new
form and -- same old grid size (10) .....

Be back later, got something else to try..

Re: grid size on forms -- NOT WEB COMPONENTS

Voila---- the solution has been found..

In V8, grid size was determined by means of a 'grid spacing' box with several
PRESET sizes in fractions of an inch. There was no way to pick any number
other than the PRESET grid sizes. And YES once you set the grid size, it
would not change, for any new form, UNTIL YOU changed the size manually
as you created a new form. It would then be the default for all new forms.

In V9 there is a new 'grid settings' box without the pre-determined sizes
being displayed for your choice. Now you can just ENTER a number into the
box and it will be enabled on the form. Once set, the grid spacing FOR THAT
              FORM is apparently permanent.

However, if you choose a number that does not fall into the 'invisible' range
that V9 apparently will allow as a default value, your choice will be enabled
on the form --- BUT ONLY FOR THAT FORM. The grid spacing will revert to
              it's (apparent) default of (10).

That means when you create a new form, the last chosen grid size WILL NOT
be passed along to any new form UNLESS it falls between 2 and 20 dots/inch.
This seems to be the upper and lower limits to our 'invisible range'. Any value
from 2 to 20 will then be the default value for all newly created forms.

I'm not sure this is a 'bug' or a problem. The only hiccup that I see, is the
fact that I cannot find any comments or documentation to inform me of the
grid spacing restrictions. I'm really not sure that (even this) is important
              enough to raise a sweat....

In review; if you want your grid spacing to be automatic on each new form
you create, keep the spacing between 2 and 20 dots/inch. Otherwise, you
will have to manually apply grid spacing to each new form...

Unless, of course, Selwyn and the boys decide to make 'a change'.

Thanx for the help, the time and the space.
