Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Employee Schedule Program from Excel

I am in the planning process of converting a employee scheduling program from excel. In excel I can enter a start date and extend over an unlimited number of columns. I use the rows to represent each employee and the shift they work on each day. Of course they are many limitations because I have to re enter the data each pay period. ( although I do have templates).

I figure I could create a browse to do this. Is any anybody familiar with the Reservation App that's part of the example apps? The opening screen is it a browse or a report? The dates extend like a spreadsheet which I am trying to accomplish. I guess you can gather that I am a relatively new user.
    Thanks

    Hi Frank,

    Welcome to Alpha.

I cant find the Reservation App you have mentioned. I do however have some experience in converting a spreadsheet app to a database.

The main issue is not so much data entry but reporting.

If you post your app with dummy data it will help us to help you better.

      Frank,

Alpha Five is supposed to work with ActiveX controls, and theoretically the control at this link should be just what you're looking for:

      http://www.dbi-tech.com/ProductPage_...sSchedule.aspx

Having said that, I find Alpha Five fairly tricky to work with using ActiveX controls. I'm about to submit a paid support request for the Xtreme Calendar Control from codejock.com which works beautifully with Microsoft Access, but fails with Alpha Five.

Alpha Five's controls are basic and scheduling activeX controls like the above one give more sophisticated capabilities to your application.

Re: Employee Schedule Program from Excel

Thanks for the help. I haven't created the dummy application. I'm still mapping it out on paper first. I was thinking a crosstab report would generate the type of printed report I'm looking for. (I'm used to using Crystal Reports) However, I'm looking for a way my staff can input the work schedule across a series of dates like a spreadsheet can. Using Active x at this point may beyond my skills.

You can see the example reservation application at http://www.a1software.net/
        Thanks....

          Hi Frank,

The schedule program you are referring to was done with X-dialog, another feature of Alpha Five. X-dialog has some genies to help get you started. However, after that you need to do some xbasic coding to get fancy.

Basically what you want can be done in A5, it is just not as easy to set up as a spreadsheet. There is a nice schedule app at http://www.learn alpha.com/MultibayS...r/Multibay.htm this article even comes with a download so you can see how it was created.

www.learn alpha.com has a few nice scheduling apps that might be a good place to start. And I have an organizer program (that I sell) with a calendar feature on my website.

In summary A5 can do what you want, you will just need to spend some time studying the apps and then mapping out your plan of action.
