Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Data Duplication

Here is my problem. If I have a table/form called Incident report and the form contains multiple check boxes (ie: Create RMA, Create CAR). My question is what is the best approach to take so that if someone checks the Create RMA box, the RMA form will open and be populated with the applicable data from the incident report. In other words we have data entry once and the data populates all applicable tables.

    Any direction is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks
    Jeff

    Re: Data Duplication

    Jeff,

The short answer is, use the 'OnChange' event of the checkbox object on the form. You can also use action scripting to populate the RMA form when it is opened.

Hope this gets you in the right direction.

      Re: Data Duplication

I have tried to do this with on change, but run into the problem of data duplication if the box is unselected. I suppose I could use a button and select on push. Specifically, how in action scripting would I be able to transfer the applicable data to the new form?

        Re: Data Duplication

        Jeff,

It has been a really long time since I have used AS so I don't want to tell you wrong. The answer also depends on how your app is working. Do you open the RMA form as a dialog on top of the main form, or do you close the main form and then open the RMA form?

Take a look at these action scripts:

Fields -> Get field values(into variables)
Variables -> Set Variable(s) to field values - fields on a form

As far as duplicating data goes, yes everytime the check box is checked it would launch the RMA form, but the same is true for a button. There are many ways to prevent duplication. Thats the fun of creating a application.

          Re: Data Duplication

If your first form is still open, could you reference the fields from the RMA form using the syntax:

          frmname:fieldname.text etc.?

            Re: Data Duplication

            I think that would be

            :frmname:fieldname.text

You might get by without it in some instances but better to be sure.
            There can be only one.

              Re: Data Duplication

Jeff, maybe your onChange event script for the checkbox control needs to be smarter. Does it do one thing if the change results in a checkmark, and a different thing when the change results in removal of a checkmark? If the onchange script does the SAME thing each time the user checks AND unchecks the box I can understand why you're getting duplicate data in other tables.
