Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Re: Alphasoftware web site up ? (and an apology)

    Hi Mark

Yes it "is a serious and legitimate question", I did not suggest otherwise, other than your implication that is if Alpha dont use there own product then it cant be such a "great product".

This question has been raised before and as Steve has pointed out, in his own way, agreed with what I said about Alpha concentrating on their own development work.

I like to use this forum for making friends and helping other users with development problems, where I can. Lets keep it that way.

No you are not the only one as there have been many discussions about this over the past couple of years. I see that you have been registered since 2000 so you might have even read a few.

First, in Alpha's defence, the web side of A5 has only been around for a few years. As this part of the system is so new, Alpha is spending a tremendous amount of time and resources building and enhancing the web side of the package. As an small/medium independant company, they have chosen to spend this time and resources on the core product and not on duplicating what already exists right now in their website. This is especially good for the users at this point as they are not only improving the product but also are currently trying to resolve a problem that has followed them for some time in the case of the browse module. Most users would agree, that this is more important to them than duplicating their website. What we also don't know is what other back end systems would need to be altered to make their new website work - more time and resources. Any small/medium business owner can relate to having to make a choice as to what to spend their time and money on as they don't have the time and resources as larger entities like Google, Microsoft, etc.

However, as was Steve's point, eventually as the web side of the product starts to mature a little more, Alpha should "put their money where there mouth is" and redesign their website with their own tools. It's not like they are unable to build such a product as they have already created a stand alone ecommerce package that they offer to their clients. I'm sure its the integration with their back end services that will be the biggest headache.

Hope that helps shed some light on the subject.
