Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

I guess I'm a little confused in that you said that V5 was self installing. Are you using a CD to transfer these files? If that's the case, Vista should ask you whether you want to run the setup when you install the disk. If, at some time in the past, you've told the OS to always run setup when you install a program CD, then the installation would start as soon as the CD is installed. Perhaps that's what you did in XP.

be sure you realize I am talking about Version 5, not 6 thru 9

in XP, I can copy the a5v5runtime folder and the app folder (and the shortcut to open the app) to an XP machine never having Alpha installed before - click the shortcut - and when it opens the first time it will write to the registry what it needs and then run (silently)

You can do the same thing in v6-9 almost. Whenever they started using the A5Controls.dll, A5ContextEval.dll, (v6 I believe) and then later the CodeJock files (v7?), those files need to be registered. If you just copy the files then you need to run regsvr32.exe to register those specific files.

        HEADS UP FOR DEVELOPERS:
If you install a test version of an application on your computer that includes a separate installation of the runtime THEN delete that installation including the runtime files, there is a very good chance that you will have to re-register those files listed above. (100% chance if the runtime installation registered those files - it's a bit hard to use them after they are deleted.)

For this purpose, I have a "register_a5.bat" file that works on my system. I'll post it here but MY FOLDER PATHS ARE PROBABLY DIFFERENT THAN ANYONE ELSE'S - you will have to modify the batch file to use it on your own system. (It's very possible that someone else posted the idea of using a batch file first but it's been a long time and I don't recall who that might have been. Whoever it was - thanks.)
        Code:
        regsvr32.exe C:\progs\A5v9\Codejock.PropertyGrid.v11.1.3.ocx
        regsvr32.exe C:\progs\A5v9\Codejock.ReportControl.v11.1.3.ocx
        regsvr32.exe C:\progs\A5v9\Codejock.SuiteCtrls.v11.1.3.ocx
        regsvr32.exe C:\progs\A5v9\Codejock.TaskPanel.v11.1.3.ocx
        regsvr32.exe C:\progs\A5v9\a5contexteval.dll
        regsvr32.exe C:\progs\A5v9\a5controls.dll
In versions 6, 7, and 8 the specific file names may be different - just look in your A5 folder.

          martinwcole-

thanks for the clarification about versions. I wasn't really thinking about any particular flavor of Alpha since I thought they would all install the same way (now corrected by CAlocklin).

The way you described it, all you had to do was copy the files, then sit back and XP would install the program.

Re: Installation in Windows Vista 64...

            Hi,

I do this with a script and a button. Redo it so it works with your system.

            Code:
'be sure these versions match your versions included in the runtime folder!
            sys_shell("regsvr32.exe c:\ups55\a5controls.dll/s")
            sys_shell("regsvr32.exe c:\ups55\A5ContextEval.dll/s")
            sys_shell("regsvr32.exe c:\ups55\SimpleChart4Lite.dll/s")
            sys_shell("regsvr32.exe c:\ups55\Codejock.PropertyGrid.v11.1.3.ocx/s")
            sys_shell("regsvr32.exe c:\ups55\Codejock.ReportControl.v11.1.3.ocx/s")
            sys_shell("regsvr32.exe c:\ups55\Codejock.SuiteCtrls.v11.1.3.ocx/s")
            sys_shell("regsvr32.exe c:\ups55\Codejock.TaskPanel.v11.1.3.ocx/s")
This is actually called from the tool bar of the main menu so i can have a user do this if needed. it can be placed in a button calling the ddefix script or however you wish. My runtime is always in the same folder as the installed db and makes it easier for me. I placed the exact path as c:\ups55\ , but you could make it better by using the alpha derived path to the alpha.exe. the /s on the end just makes it silent.

this is in addition to having my installer register these files when the install occurs.

Hope it helps with another way for you.

            .

Re: Installation in Windows Vista 64...

That's a great idea, Dave! Since A5 starts but just shows an error message when those files aren't registered, the user can still get into the program so why not do it from there.

And, to make it a little more generic, the path to the exe folder could be determined in the code:
              Code:
              exe_path = a5.get_exe_path()
              sys_shell("regsvr32.exe " + exe_path + "\a5controls.dll/s")
              sys_shell("regsvr32.exe " + exe_path + "\A5ContextEval.dll/s")
              sys_shell("regsvr32.exe " + exe_path + "\SimpleChart4Lite.dll/s")
              sys_shell("regsvr32.exe " + exe_path + "\Codejock.PropertyGrid.v11.1.3.ocx/s")
              sys_shell("regsvr32.exe " + exe_path + "\Codejock.ReportControl.v11.1.3.ocx/s")
              sys_shell("regsvr32.exe " + exe_path + "\Codejock.SuiteCtrls.v11.1.3.ocx/s")
              sys_shell("regsvr32.exe " + exe_path + "\Codejock.TaskPanel.v11.1.3.ocx/s")
Of course, you may still have to change the specific files for other versions of A5.

                Thanks Cal,

I just have not taken the time to set that up, but I will basically copy your set up if you do not mind.

All I was responding to was the issue of "self installing". I have no idea why Chris' installation is hanging up but I don't expect my "solution" to solve that problem.

                        Just to note:
I just tried to install the v9 runtime in a Vista laptop and gave me problems.
                        It did eventually installed.
I run a runtime creation of one of my apps and gave me the following errors
                        1 not enough memory
2 could not complete a runtime install.

I turn off the laptop, re-started and re-run the runtime, this time it works.
