Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Deleting records in embedded browse

    The action of deleting a record within an embedded browse is simple. I use Action Scripting to delete the selected record. This results in a dialogue box being displayed giving the option to delete or not. (Yes or No)

    If the answer is Yes, I want to take one action. If the answer is No, I want to take a different action. Therefore I need to know which option was selected. How can I find out?

    Are you using an Action Script to do the delete? If so, I think you can do a Conditional Action Script based on the Delete Script, where the Yes variable can be called for one action and the No variable can be called for the other action. You must check off the Conditional action check box to get it to work.
    If you are using xbasic, you can do the same with a conditional xbasic script based on the Yes and No being written as variables.

      Thanks for your reply Pete.

      I am using Action Scripting for the delete but there is no provision for any following instructions to be conditional on the result of the delete statement.

      I presume some flag is set by the Delete statement but have no way of knowing.

      The same applies if I use xbasic. The dialogue box will appear asking asking for confirmation of the delete but no indication of any flags being set.

        Look at this sample. This might help you.

          Thanks for your reply Pete.

          I have already tried this approach. The first message box will set a logical field according to the reply from the user.

          Assuming you wish to continue with the delete, the program then executes the delete instruction using Action Scripting. This leads to a second message asking for confirmation of the delete. I have no way of knowing the result of the second confirmation. If the answer is Yes, I want to update an Archive table. If the answer is No, I ignore it.

            Re: Deleting records in embedded browse

            The code behind the delete record action script is
            Code:
            topparent:Browse1.delete_record()
            I can not for the life of me remember where I read it but the delete_record() method takes an optional logical flag. If you set it to true like
            Code:
            topparent:Browse1.delete_record(.t.)
            Then the confirmation dialog is supressed. You will need to convert the action to inline xBasic.
            So if you precede the delete with a dialog as in Pete's example and the user chooses yes then the delete will happen and you can run your archive code.

            Another option is to use the OnDeleteRecord record event in the field rules

              David, I like Tim's suggestions, myself. You can't get the user's choice on the delete confirmation dialog using only action scripting.

                Thank you Tom.

                I tried the first method using (.t.) but this did not suppress the confirmation. I then tried (.f.) but that didn't work either.

                Finally I adopted your other suggestion and used the field rules as a means of handling the problem and sure enough it worked fine.

                I reckon I have spent the best part of 8 hours trying to solve this and now magically you have put me right.

                Many many thanks,

                David

                  I may have mispelled the name on my last post but my thanks are both for Tim and Tom. Obviously two very able experts.

                  Thanks to you both.

                    David,
                    The code for this right on the form delete button or browse OnRowDblClick event is this (correct table and object names in red). The "52" in the ui_dlg_box() and the result numbers you can find here:

                    http://msgboard.alphasoftware.com/al..._msg_box%28%29

                    Code:
                    dim vresult as N

                    vresult = ui_msg_box("DELETE CONFIRMATION","Delete For Sure?",52)
                    if vresult = 6
                    	dim t as p
                    	t = table.get("[COLOR="Red"]tablename[/COLOR]")
                    	t.change_begin()
                    	t.delete()
                    	t.change_end(.t.)
                    	topparent:[COLOR="Red"]browse1[/COLOR].refresh()

                    else if vresult = 7
                    	msgbox("I decided not to")
                    end if

                      Thank you Mike.

                      I have made a note of those codes.

                      As far as the original problem was concerned, it is now solved thanks to Tim and Tom.

                      However, I really do appreciate you taking the trouble to help.

                      Thanks again,

                      David
