Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Something has changed in V9

For several years, one of the 'staples' of form development in A5 has been the
ability to "copy" parts of or an entire form to a new form.

This makes life alot easier when placing buttons or other 'thingies' on a new
form.... Just go to the 'older' form, place it in design mode, hilite the parts
wanted, copy them, and the go to the 'newer' form (in design mode, of
course), paste the copy to the new form.

This does not work in V9 (at least not on my computer). I do see that the
new form shows a left to right 'ripple' when 'paste' is pressed, but nothing
becomes visible on the form. I have also noticed that this feature has
apparently disappeared in my older V8 apps where it has working for quite a
    long time.

    Sooooooooo

Either I have some problem with my computer or my A5 code -- or somehow
this 'nice' little feature has been eliminated or lost or something.

Has anyone else seen this problem?????

Additional Info: Just tried this on my laptop in V8 and in V9 and it still works there in both.
I seem to have a localized problem on my 'box'.
    Investigating......

    Hi Richard,

You mention that you can see this problem now in V8, this is interesting when you consider that there has not been any change in V8 for about a year.

Have you tried making a template form without any fields on it and copying it to a new table?

I realise this does not answer your problem directly but could put your thinking into another direction.

This plus the fact that the issue is present in v8 would suggest to me that you have a display issue. Might you have changed the screen resolution down and the pasted object is appearing "off screen"?
      There can be only one.

No, I do not think it is a display issue.
I saw this change in V8 and see it with V9. I have narrowed it down to there being coding and "complex" properties attached to objects. A simple browse or button you can copy and paste. Add a button on a browse and forget it. It will litterally wipe out the entire form that it is pasted to. I have not figured out exactly all the additions that render an object "uncopyable" but it has something to do with attached properties, which are more robust in v8/9 vs v7 and below.

Try copying form objects individually and not as a group and see what happens.

          Well -- given enuff time.....etc
Apparently the problem is limited to two forms that have been corrupted.
The error states: "Invalid structured store image." when trying to go into
          design mode.

I have recently had to replace the remote hard drive that stored the A5 app.
I replaced all data on the new hard drive using Ghost and, as far as I can tell,
          everything else is working properly.

At this time, I can neither rename, delete or edit the two forms in question.

It seems strange that only one app has become a problem.

Since the form names are hard coded into the app (they are both menus), it
appears that I have a larger problem. How to get rid of the corrupted forms
so that I may create new ones.

          More later..

OK final entry. First of all, the failure to copy and paste was between two
different databases. Copy and paste in the same database worked at all times.

For some unknown reason, two menus (one a startup form) became corrupted
(don't know how or why) and were causing the problem. As I said earlier,
I was unable to edit or rename or delete these two forms. Since I could not
delete or rename them, I could not re-create them.

The final solution was to 'trash' the working copy of the database and replace
it with a backup copy. I actually put the replacement into a new folder with
the same name and location as the old one. All shortcuts, and XBasic code
references to and within the app still work. Luckily, no backups had been made
since the corruption occurred, so the backup was 'pristeen'.

I guess it has been "interesting" but I have no other answers. Thanx to
everyone for their input and help.

              Richard,
Again, you can still copy simple objects between and within applications. But if you try and copy a complex/compound object, like a browse with buttons, from one form to another, either between OR inside the same application.... problems.
