Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Report Hyperlinks

If you add a hotspot to a report and then print the report to PDF, it only seems to carry over the hyperlink if it has been explicitly entered, i.e. it does not take over a calculated URL value.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a bug / wishlist item ?

    Re: Report Hyperlinks

    Hi Maurice,

Could you post a sample of your app. It is difficult to tell if this is a human error or an undocumented process.

Are you trying to print from the hyper link or the PDF button on the menu bar?

      Re: Report Hyperlinks

      Hi Keith

I added hotspots to a report - one was attached to a heading with an explicit "http://www.abcde.com" type link and the "others" are on the detail lines using an "=fieldname" link.
If I preview the report and then print it to PDF, the resulting PDF (in Adobe Acrobat Reader) contains the header link but not the detail links.

        Hi Maurice,

I'm not sure I understand what you are doing.

What do you mean when you say you "added hotspots to a report"?

How does that work? Do you mean Hyper links?

If you do, they were designed to be used as a drilldown.

          Re: Report Hyperlinks

          Hi Keith

I've attached 3 screenshots - the first one shows the previewed report where both the "www.packetseeds.com" heading and the variety names are working "hotspot" hyperlinks.

However when the report is directed to the PDF generator, only the heading hyperlink is active.

The other two screenshots are of the script entries for the two "hyperlink methods".

I hope this makes it a bit clearer !

            Re: Report Hyperlinks

            Maurice,

If you add the field to a report, change the onpush Event (right click, events) you can also make it look like a hyperlink by formatting the field (underline, blue).

In the onpush event you can use action scripting to open a url. This will carry over to a pdf as well.

It is not clear if "Wepage" contians the link to the site? ie http://www.packetseeds.com/prodid

What is in the field webpage?

Can you post an example of your app? A pared down version that would show the report?

              Re: Report Hyperlinks

              Hi Bill

If you look at the third screenshot in my previous post, I am using the method you suggest where the "=Webpage" calculated URL is a field in the database that holds the relevant http address for the webpage required.
In the second screenshot, I have explicitly entered the http address for the heading hotspot.

Both methods work on the screen preview of the report but only the heading one works when output as a PDF.

                Re: Report Hyperlinks

this is not an Alpha issue. A pdf will only use a link that it recognizes as a an actual link. like www.packetseeds.com. The PDF Does not know that your text has an underlying link to it. If you report showed the actual link it would work fine.

                  Hi Bill

You are right - if I output the actual http address on the report, the PDF carries the hyperlink.
I was hoping that there might be some way of "hiding" the URL on the report behind a blue underlined piece of text or an image.

                    Re: Report Hyperlinks

You need to output an HTML page rather than a pdf.
I am not an expert in creating pdf pages (as in using Adobe to do so). The question is: can you do that with Adobe? i.e. display a text in lieu of the URL?
If you can't do it with Adobe, you won't be able to do it with alpha, but the opposite is not necessarily true.

                      Re: Report Hyperlinks

You can add "hidden" hyperlinks within the full Adobe Acrobat package but this takes a long time if you have several hundred to do.
I tried printing the Alpha report to HTML but this was no better.

                      Such is life !
