Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    table not open error

    I have the following function in a class which I call 2 times when executing an xdialog to load items in 2 dropdown lists in the xdialog form. Every other time I run the xdialog I get a message at the tp.fetch_first() line that the "table is not open". In other words, I run it and it works. I run it again and this error appears. I'm closing the table after getting the record count. I even tried deleting the table pointer, but this didn't work. Is there something else I should do with the table pointer? Any idea on why this message occurs every 2nd time I run my xdialog?

    Thanks,
    BobA

    function GetLookupList as c (tablename as c, fieldlist as c, filter as c, sort as c)
    dim tp as p
    dim cnt as n

    'get number of records in table to set array size
    tp = table.open(tablename)
    tp.fetch_first()
    cnt = tp.records_get()
    tp.close()

    'load table into array and dump it's properties (array as type 'p') into a list
    dim arr[cnt] as p
    arr.initialize_from_table(tablename,filter,sort)
    GetLookupList = arr.dump_properties(fieldlist)
    end function

    Re: table not open error

    Bob,
    out of context doesn't help. Function runs fine no matter how many times it runs so without having the rest of the script that this function is called from and produces the error how are we (me) supposed to help? :) More than happy to help but believe me it is hard to give TOO much information so always give as much as possible.

      try the following, for which you don't need a function
      tablename="products"
      n=tablecount(tablename,".t.")
      or
      n=tablecount("products",".t.")

        Re: table not open error

        Thanks for your replies. I'm not getting the error now.

        I'm finding that when things aren't working right for reasons unexplained it's good to exit and reload Alpha and test again. Sometimes that's enough to make errors go away. Not sure if it's a bug or a Vista compatibility issue or something else.

        Thanks Martin for the TABLECOUNT tip. I found and used TABLEMAX today for the first time. I didn't know about these 'lookup table' type functions and haven't seen them used in Alpha's examples. Now that I know about them I will definitely add them to my stock of ammo.

        Regards,
