Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Combo Box will not display 1st field from table

I've been playing with the combo box and found that it will not display data using the first field from a table. Any other field is fine, just not the first one.

Under Setup, choose to assign the value to a Variable.
Under Choices, Choices are computer Automatically, From a Table (Current Table), Field... choose the first field from the table

Now do a preview and... nothing in the dropdown list. Same after saving the form and running it.

Now choose any other field from the table... and under preview you'll get a dropdown list.

Could someone drop a combo box on a form and try this?

Using the most recent build, but this was the same under the previous two builds as well.

    Thanks,

    David

Re: Combo Box will not display 1st field from table

I don't see this problem, using a form built on the customer table in AlphaSports. I populated the combo box with field values from the Customer_id field. (Which is first in the table structure). Works just fine. What are you doing differently?

Is your form based on a set? Is the combo box trying to display link field values?

Re: Combo Box will not display 1st field from table

Thanks Tom... that got me looking a little deeper...

The several tables I tried this with all had the first field as a numeric field... that's the problem. I just tried this with the Alphasports database and selecting any field in a file that is numeric will not display data in the dropdown.

I went back to my database and changed the first field in my table from numeric to character and it works.

      Any reason you know of?

      Thanks,

      David

Re: Combo Box will not display 1st field from table

I see the same behavior. Haven't noticed this before... but then I rarely use combo boxes. A simple solution is to change the spec for the automatic computation of choices from the current table. Instead of simply naming a numeric field, just define an expression that converts the numeric to character data... i.e. ltrim(str(quantity))

Send in a bug report. I do not see why this should make a difference.

It is a bug, but it is fixed now. Will be in the next update.

In the mean time the work around is easy.
Just specify an expression as the data field and make the expression:

              "" + yournumericfield

              e.g.

              "" + quantity

I am still experiencing this problem. Has the bug been fixed?
                  I have V9, Build 2095.

There hasn't been an update out yet, but see Selwyn's reponse - that works.
