Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Image on report from character field

    This is probably very simple, but I can't seem to get a handle on it.

    I have a table with a character field called "Photo." I use a field rule to autopopulate that field with a path to a folder containing photos, with the actual image file name being the record number. (This is not an image reference field.)

    Example: /PD/RMS/PersonsPhotos/00001.jpg

    I do it this way so that on my web form, a user can upload an image to that record by simply renaming their image to "0001.jpg" or whatever the record number is.

    But now I need to place that same photo on a report, and I can't figure out how to do it, since my "photo" field is actually a character field.

    On the WAS, I was able to easily place my "photo" field on a grid and change its characteristics to an image field, which allows it to display the actual photo, but I don't see an option to do that in a report.

    I put a new .bmp field on the report, but I couldn't find any way to reference it to my "photo" (character) field.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    In an active or passive link table you can usually override the field type but I am not sure if that is possible for DBF files.

    The dynamic image capabilities seem quite limited on the desktop unless you use HTML memos.

      Did you get your image to print on the report ? I too cannot get my image to display on my report.

        Re: Image on report from character field

        This is how I did it.

        I use an Image Reference Field, but... I find this type of field very slow for on-screen display or in a browse.

        So, I add a field to my table that is an Image Reference field type, but I don't use it in forms or browses.

        In my table I have a character field that contains the name of my image - full page and image name - this field is on my form. When I add an image to the record I update the image reference field with the image name via code. The Image Reference field just carries the name of the image, but the field knows what to do with it.

        Now, in a report I can just drop that Image Reference field into the report and all works well. I hope that makes sense.

          David,
          It would be very helpful if you could whip up an example and post it. I for one would like to see how you did this. Thanks

            I'll do that. Just finished up a example of how to work with an activex control and drawing. Should be done that today. The image reports will be straight forward. It seems that the only way to get images on a report, and to page properly - with am image changing for each record - is to use the Image Reference Field. I've tried with the activex controls I have - which work great in other development systems - but the ondetail events have no effect on the controls in A5. Anyway... an example is coming.

              Re: Image on report from character field

              We print ID cards for our Clients using captured photos and signatures. We use the case number as a file name for each, except that the signature has an "s" at the end of the filename.

              the card, a report, has a bitmap object for both the photo and the signature. in the on_print_init event, if the files exist, we replace the default image on the report with the actual images. see code below.

              Code:
              IF FILE.EXISTS(VAR->BMPNAME)
              	bitmap2.bitmap.filename = var->bmpname
                ELSE
                	bitmap2.bitmap.filename = "g:\IMAGES\AVAIL.jpg"
              END IF
              if file.exists(var->signame)
              	bitmap3.bitmap.filename = var->signame
                else
                	bitmap3.bitmap.filename = "g:\IMAGES\blank.jpg"
              end if
              var->bmpname and var->signame are passed from a button attached to a form.

              the bitmap2 object is the photo and the bitmap3 object is the signature.
              If specific images are not found, we default the image for these objects to specific files.

              Hope this helps

                Re: Image on report from character field

                Here's a sample of what I do for gathering images and putting them into reports. It's not really what you're doing, Rich, but maybe it'll help. Again, when I get an image, I write that image information.. path, name, etc. to an Image Reference field. The code it attached to the button on the browse.

                Once the Image Reference field is set, just place that field on your report and A5 knows what to do with it.

                Open frmImages, click on a row in the browse, then click on the Get Image button. Pick an image and the character image field will be updated, the image will be displayed, and the character image info will be written to the Image Reference Field in the tblImages table.

                There's lots of stuff to do with this sample to lock it down, but it works.

                The other form in this sample is for an Activex control. If you want to see how that works read my post here...

                If this doesn't fit very well post a sample of your app and we can get it working.
