Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Custom A5v9 App Opens Then Closes

In Alpha 5 version 9, I have created a simple application for desktop use. I have a runtime license for this version so I use the Create Install Package in order to distribute my app. No errors creating the install package. I go to another PC running Windows XP Pro with all service packs and updates, install the app, and run it. For one second a window opens that looks like a blank Alpha control panel then disappears. Thats all that happens. I have tried to install this on two other PCs - same results. Any ideas what Im doing wrong? Thanks.

Not sure but I have had similar situations when I have some bad code/calculation happening when a database opens and crashes Alpha immediately as you have stated. Do you have an autoexec script running ...if so hold the Control+Shift to bypass it and see if that is it.

Re: Custom A5v9 App Opens Then Closes

I seem to have the exact same situation here.
I notice that the same problem exists on my development system and that it makes no sense to create the install as it is not going to work.
Now I am testing the application in the runengine on my development system and found out that when I eliminate the use of the autoexec script, the application works properly.
I wonder if the use of a start up form and autoexec are mutually exclusive.
In the autoexec I use the "throttle" to check for a single user.
Keeping the first not properly working instance open, I started the application as a second instance. That triggers the throttle function with an error message about exceeding license count, so that seems to work allright.

I wonder if anybody has a solution to our problem?

I removed the auto start up (thanks for the suggestion) and tried again. Now I get an error:
The procedure entry point ?GetModule@CXbasicExecutable@@UAEPAXJ@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library A5XBASIC.dll
At least now the brick wall I'm hitting has a name.

          Allen,

Good news for you, your brick wall now has a name.
The bad news is that my brick wall is still anonymous.

Did you consider to refresh the zip file of the runtime. That can be done as part of the InstallMaker process. Maybe that could solve your problem?

I think the problem is I'm using RunTime with an active link. According to documentation I'll have use the Run Engine.

You could very well be right on that.

Meanwhile I have made some progress and got things working again.
It seems that setting too many restrictions before creating the install has something to do with the problem on my side. I removed some of them on my development system, created the install and got it to do what it's made for.

                Jo,
I wonder if the use of a start up form and autoexec are mutually exclusive.
No--they can be used at the same time and is done, I would say, most of the time by developers.

If your problem does go away when you disable the autoexec script then I would pursue that avenue of attack.
