Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Halting a running script

    Hello,

We have created a script that performs a pretty long operation.
So far we managed to get a prompt when the script Starts to Either proceed or Stop. This prompt disappears when we hit the Yes or No button

However we need a way to be able to stop a script once it is running, either by a cancel dialog that stays open while the script runs, or a key combination.

In my researches I found the following in the Alpha Five Documentation:

    Halting Scripts

The View > Settings... > Preferences > Running Scripts setting allows you to set the Enable 'Halt Script' dialog. This setting will interrupt a long running script to ask you if you wish to stop it.
I believe this does what we need, but I have not been able to find this setting in

    view > Settings > Preferences

Does it still exist in alpha Five v9 ?

Is there another method of doing this ?

I'm pretty sure i'm overlooking something simple, but I cant point it out.

    Thanks for any input/advice

That Halt is just for debugging purposes and should not be used operationally.

The proper way to do this is to start a modeless XDialog box with a cancel button. The Xdialog box would either run the code, or send a flag (message) to the code to halt at the next point where the flag is checked.

This will be able to stop any XBasic code looping, but will not be able to stop an operation like Append, as that is all within Alpha's internal code. If the latter is the case, you might be able to shut down the session of the operation, but that is not a trivial solution.

Thank you for the quick answer.

We will experiment with the cancel button then.
As you said, just killing the session is far from being a clean solution :)

Sorry I hit the submit button a bit fast here.

You mentionned displaying a modeless Dialog box.

I believe We do use this at the beginning of our script, but as soon as we hit OK it disappears.

        Code:
        ui_msg_box ()
Does that mean we have no way of cancelling a started operation?

In short here is what our script does:

It reads through a series of tables, evaluates conditions and then writes the result in an output table.

UI_MSG_BOX(), and many others built in UI functions are modal, meaning they pause the code until you exit the dialog.

Look up in the Alpha Five help XDIALOG and MODELESS. Also review the sample database, Learning XDialog. There are many examples that should be of help.

Thank you for pointing us in the right direction.
I'll follow your suggestion and see what we 'll come up with.

try putting an XDialog box at some 'key' point (or several if necessary) of the
script. Using XDialog will allow you to give the user choices like 'continue' or
'OK' as well as 'Quit' or "Cancel'. If the user wants to continue, just click on
the appropriate button -- same for quit. Of course, you will have to program the
script to skip to the end of the script using the 'goto' command (if you want
to stop). This will require a moderate knowledge of XBasic to accomplish,
but it should not be that difficult.
Keep in mind that doing this will require that 'someone' monitor the script during
it's execution -- at least until the decision is made to continue to the end or
              quit.

I tried to do that but without success at this point.

Once the loop is started i cant get out till the end of it, i guest I have yet to find the right place to put the dialog.

                I'll keep trying.

                Thanks for the pointer

I have placed in the code archive a link to some sample code that allows periodic messages and canceling by a modeless dialog box that you could modify. Start in the code archive at Execute Code with Progress Messages and Cancel sample

                    Thank you,

I'll have a look at the samples and test some.

I'll keep you posted on the results.

                      Re: Halting a running script

The samples you sent me worked like a charm !!!

I did a bit of tweaking in my code, now the user can:

                      1) Decide to Start or Abort the operation when the script is launched
                      2) Cancel the operation once the script has actually started to perform processing.

This is exactly what I wanted it to do.

Thank you very much for all the help !!!

Off we go to the next hurdle :)
