Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Child does not link to parent

I have a Database ( parent) linked to a child
The data in the child is displayed in the form of a browse
The parent contains information of the Tractors
And the child is when the tractor went out/in and where it attended
All works well ,when adding the child record I have the put the record number of the parent record number and linked that to the parent record number. The records show o.k. as you flick through them but all of a sudden they do not show
I have looked in the child database and all is ok
If I add another record in the child it will show that but not the rest even though the records are the same
Is there a refresh you can do as it seems the link is lost on the old records?

Record number is not a good choice for a linking field. You should have some sort of "id" for each tractor. This would become the linking field to the child "usage" table.

When you create a form based on this set with a browse of the child table on it and enter records in the browse, you do not need to fill in the linking field. It will automatically be populated with the if of the current record visible on the form.
    There can be only one.

      Thanks Stan
We do not delete records in these databases
I still can not get my head round that for some reason they stopped showing but when you enter another record only the new records show
Is there an 'update' links or something of that kind

      Regards
      John

Stan was being nice. It does not matter whether you delete records, you NEED to use an ID field to do your linking--not the record number (I too am being nice by not commenting further on this). In the parent table the ID field can be numeric or character and set in field rules to auto-increment (in your existing records you will have to first enter the ID numbers before setting the field to auto-increment). Use this ID field as the linking field in your set and your problems (at least in this regard!) should be over. Oh, and just to be clear, the ID field has to be in the child table also, but not set to auto-increment. And as with the existing parent records, you'll have to manually input the ID numbers in existing child records.

          Thanks for the reply
have done that and all is well
Thank you both for your support, I was not being unfriendly but I took it that the record no was a number and with the records showing one minute and then not got me confused but with the help of experts like you helps novices like me learn a great deal.

          Kind regards
