Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Buy it or not?

    Hi!
I have only heard about Alpha Software the first time today. I have developed a small inventory system using php/apache/mysql five years ago. I used Macromedia Dreamweaver with an extension called PHAkt. I used the extension because it let me build my application without needing to code anything by hand. I need to update the web application, but unfortunately, PHAkt is no more. That's how I found Alpha 5.

I was a bit surprised to see that even the Alpha Software Store does not use its own software, but it runs ASP.

I installed the trial software on one of our PCs and managed to connect to my MYSQL server in 3 minutes. However, when I was building my simple form, the software froze with 100% CPU usage and had to shut it down from the Task Manager.

    Hi Csaba,

    Welcome to Alpha.

I am surprised to hear about your computer freezing. Does this happen all the time or with just your application?

We are here to help, what is your question?

      Thanks for the quick response.
Let me say what I did that caused the software to hang.
      1. I connected to my mysql database, and chose one table.
      2. I created a form.
      3. On the form I created a "combo box"
      4. In the combo box properties I selected Choices -> Computed automatically -> Current Table ->Field "Oligo-name"
      5. After saving the form, I opened it for viewing.
      6. I clicked on the combo box arrow and the software went into 100% CPU usage and did not respond to anything.

It worries me if such a simple task can hang the software, how it can hadle more complicated tasks.

Have you checked the forum references to "opportunistic locking"? Might be relevant.
        There can be only one.

          Hi Csaba,

What were you going to do with the Combo Box?

What would happen if you just put some fields on the form to view?

            Re: Buy it or not?

I have come across a similar problem in V8. I haven't been a big user of combo boxes and have normally filled them with static lists or xbasic. However yesterday I set one up on a computed automatically - field value. The form loads okay but in design mode if I right click the combo box and select properties it freezes for about 10 mins and then finally displays the combo box properties. Haven't had time to investigate it further but it maybe a bug or just a corrupt form.

It seems that the longer the computed list is the longer it takes to display the object properties. Not sure why this is or whether it would be considered a bug.

How many records are you trying to put into this combo box?

And what is the purpose of this combo box? Perhaps there is another Alpha tool/optionn that you should be using for your purpose.

                  Hi Al,

Currently there is just under 9000 records. I need to filter the list but just wanted to do some quick tests. The surprising thing is when the form is in view mode the combo is populated without any delays. It is only in design mode when I select the combo properties there is a delay. The 10 mins was a bit of an exaggeration and it was in fact closer to 4 mins. Enough time to make a cup of coffee. I will go back to the populate with xbasic route and hopefully I will not see the delay.
