Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Alpha freezes when I try to create a browse on one of my sets

I have a simple database with 3 tables and 1 set. The set has one one-to-many links and 5 one-to-one links. When I try to create a Browse on this set, even if I only pick 2 fields, when I hit "Finish" a blank browse screen displays and Alpha freezes and I have to close the program.

I am able to create browses from my 3 tables.

Interestingly, I am able to create an imbedded browse of that set in a form.

I'm able to create browses on sets in my other databases.

I'm running Alpha on Windows XP.

    Can someone help!??!

Six links between three tables? Doesn't sound simple to me.

I would start with the plainest set I could devise, try that, then start adding complexity one link at a time, texting each step.

Maybe I need database construction advise: The database lists 6 steps to be followed, and each step needs a sign-off by an employee. So I link to my employee table 6 times. Is there a better way to handle this?

Rather simplistic but this might work. View the main form, choose a step(s), enter employee id's in the browse.

Exit form, view the sec form, choose an employee, view what steps they have completed.

Thank you Stan for your sample database! I studied it and it makes a lot of sense. Regrettably I over-simplified my description of my database; and the 6 steps do not have common fields so I can't see how to make a 'steps' database. I know my db structure is not ideal, but I don't understand why I can create an imbedded browse in a form, but not a stand-alone browse? Do you mind taking a look at my DB to see why I can't make a browse of the set main-ncr_rma? (I adopted ths DB from a co-worker who was terminated and neither of us are DB people - just corporate finance types - so it's sort of a mess.... but I love Alpha b/c I can create a working DB knowing so little!)

          Thanks, Elle

            Ellen

I can modify your set to eliminate the multiple links to the employees and a browse will be created.

If I link to the employees twice, a browse is created. If I link for a third time, then the browse can't be created.

Stan has suggested a normalized approach rather than your de-normalized approach. The field name issues can be resolved by having a field describing the step.

I can see your approach has merit also and should work.

I'll submit my results to the bug patrol and see what they say...

Amen to that, it works that way for me as well.

It will be Monday before I will have a chance to examine your sample. Hopefully Al will have some help to offer when he gets an answer.

                      Sorry, I have not clue.

If you look at the dates of each patch release in release notes, you'll see that there is not a schedule for patches. Other than being eclectic.

Re: Alpha freezes when I try to create a browse on one of my sets

I'm good to go here! Awaiting the next patch, and in the meantime I am able to create my browse as an imbedded browse in a form.

However, I did spent a lot of time this weekend trying to turn my DB into a more 'normalized' format as Stan suggested. The data input I can see working, but getting a printable page showing all info is giving me major trouble. I don't want the 6 steps to show as an imbedded browse. Is there a way around that? I could create 6 forms each filtering for a single step, but can't get those 6 forms to show up properly as sub-forms on a single form.

Stan, you don't need to now, but if you have time to look at my 2 DB approaches, I'd be very grateful.

I've fixed up my original approach (CAR database) and am including my attempt at taking your suggestions w/ a separate table for each step.(CAR database steps in tables).
