Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Re: Displaying Plus sign

    What is the root issue? Displaying a positive numeric value with a leading plus sign or the ability to enter a value to be used in some sort of calculation with a leading plus sign?

    I have an ondepart event for a character field which removes the decimal point from a character field representing a number should someone desire to enter it. The later processing of the data presumes no decimal point.

    You can allow the user to enter +1.25 in a character field and store 1.25 in a usable numeric field with val(remspecial(characterfield))/100. The user need never know that you aren't directly processing their entry.
    There can be only one.

      Re: Displaying Plus sign

      When the optician gets a prescription from the patient (written by an optometrist) He first enters the information exactly like the doctor wrote it (with + & - signs). The original prescription is stored for reference & is not changed.
      Then depending on the kind of glasses that are being made the user presses 1 of 4 buttons that will recalculate the prescription for either Near, Distance, Bifocal, or Intermediate lenses. This new prescription is displayed along side the original (preferably with the correct + and - signs).

        Barry,

        I think that you should capture and store the prescription as a character value and then convert when you are doing your calculation. I say this for a few reasons. From the point of view of someone who is not well versed in XBasic: 1) It is easier over all to display it 2) It is easier to do any error checking on entry 3) Formatting for character fields is very flexible.

        When you do your calculations it is as simple as using the val() function. From the interactive editor:

        dim diop as c
        dim numdiop as n

        diop = "+1.5"
        numdiop = val(diop)
        ?numdiop
        = 1.5
        ?numdiop*2
        = 3

        Your coding will be much easier this way.

          Re: Displaying Plus sign

          That part wasn't mentioned before.
          If the user enters the values preceded by + or -, then as Doug said, stick with character fields and calculate as necessary.
          Code:
          dim x as c="1"
          ?val(x)
          = 1
          x="-1"
          ?val(x)
          = -1
          Another approach where you could keep these fields as numeric is to put a button or a spinner or even a field in the table to the left of the number that toggles between + and -

          For example, your table would have:

          Rt_Eye_V this is a character field that will have either a + or a -
          Rt_Eye this field holds the numeric value
          same for left eye..

            Re: Displaying Plus sign

            Thanks everyone for your input. Will sleep on it & try to work out the best way to deal with it. There are Pluses & Minuses (pun intended) with each method.
            Good night

              Re: Displaying Plus sign

              Just to round out the possibilities, you might think about separating the + and - into a completely different field. This might deliver another level of separation that you need.
