Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

    Get global variable for report

    How do I get the value of a global variable in order to display it on a report?

    Re: Get global variable for report

    Create your report. Add a field. When selecting source for the field select Var instead of the base Table and select the global variable you have already dim'd and populated elsewhere.

      I do the same as Les, but I also "declare" the global in the report layout's properties. -- tom

        Re: Get global variable for report

        Is having this statement in Calculated Values sufficient to access the value in the global variable:

        localvar=global_variables().globalvar

        If globalvar is the global variable created elsewhere, is this all I need to get its value and place it in a local variable localvar, which I can then add on the report as a calculated field? Or, is there a better way?

          L. that beats me! I'd have to study the help file to answer your question.

          For me, I go to the properties of the report, using top menu. I choose Variables. I enter the variable name on the global tab.

          Then I drop that variable on the report layout.

          If the script that calls the report sets a value in the global, it will be passed to the layout. Not necessary to define a calc field to pass a global variable.

            Not in a calc field, but yes in a script.
            To get it to work in a calc field, you will need to put it in a UDF.

            Yeh.... why run in circles, capturing the global variable into local one then using the local one? Or why put it in a UDF, etc? All you need to do is:
            calc field=..expression using var->globalvar ....

              Re: Get global variable for report

              Thanks guys, it's working now!
              Under the global tab for variables, I defined
              globalvar=""
              and in calculated values, to use the global variable:
              VAR->globalvar
              I set the value of globalvar in the OnPrint event to test the passing of the value, and the value did show on the report.

              What's confusing is that you have to define the global variable for this report even though by definition a global variable should already be available to all. And the fact that the title bar is asking you to "Define new variables" and that you have to set an initial value, for example spaces.

              After I removed the test value from the OnPrint event, the value of globalvar still remains when I run the report. I guess a value of a global variable remains set until set to something else?

                It is available. Unless you create/dim it for the report Alpha has no way of knowing that you want to reference the global variable. You could have a local variable that might conflict.

                When you define it for the report you tell Alpha to make that global variable "visible" to the report.
                There can be only one.

                  Hi,

                  I am replacing the "Customer Information" from the Calculated values to using GLOBAL Variables on the forms and reports.
                  My Condition:
                  (1) I have two different SETs, the one for "Form" and the other one for "Report" purpose.
                  (2) I used the UDF and Fired this UDF at a parent table "OnsaveRecord" Event with dim Global.
                  (3) I defined the Global variables at Report property also.
                  (4) I have a button and called for "Print" on the form and it is working fine with Global values.

                  However, when I want to print from my "Filter" form, I do not see the "Customer Information" on same the same report.

                  What did I missing on here?

                    You are missing attaching a sample so we can see what you are doing. Descriptions are nice but no substitute for a working/non-working example database.

                      Hi Stan,

                      I have attached the Form and a report from Form Button and Filter form with criteria and the result of report which lost the variables.

                      I hope those screen shots are enough to explain my problem.

                        Stan,

                        I just made the small "TEST" version which is working fine both of reports. I have to go back and review the problem.

                        Thank you

                            Good Morning, Stan

                            I attached my sample files on here.

                            At least, my test dbf is shown the Global variables on the REPORT but wrong record of Contract and customer records.
                            Inv_Test_1.jpg

                            I went back to my original and review, rewrite and created new report but I could not figure out why
                            (1) the global variables are not shown or
                            (2) wrong data is shown on the reports.

                            Wrong Data is shown Case -- After printed from Form's Button, the Global Variables did not refreshed (I think) and It just shown at the new REPORT which found from my "Filter" dialog.
