Bonus TIPS for Successful Posting

Try a Search First
It is highly recommended that a Search be done on your topic before posting, as many questions have been answered in prior posts. As with any search engine, the shorter the search term, the more "hits" will be returned, but the more specific the search term is, the greater the relevance of those "hits". Searching for "table" might well return every message on the board while "tablesum" would greatly restrict the number of messages returned.

When you do post
First, make sure you are posting your question in the correct forum. For example, if you post an issue regarding Desktop applications on the Mobile & Browser Applications board , not only will your question not be seen by the appropriate audience, it may also be removed or relocated.

The more detail you provide about your problem or question, the more likely someone is to understand your request and be able to help. A sample database with a minimum of records (and its support files, zipped together) will make it much easier to diagnose issues with your application. Screen shots of error messages are especially helpful.

When explaining how to reproduce your problem, please be as detailed as possible. Describe every step, click-by-click and keypress-by-keypress. Otherwise when others try to duplicate your problem, they may do something slightly different and end up with different results.

A note about attachments
You may only attach one file to each message. Attachment file size is limited to 2MB. If you need to include several files, you may do so by zipping them into a single archive.

If you forgot to attach your files to your post, please do NOT create a new thread. Instead, reply to your original message and attach the file there.

When attaching screen shots, it is best to attach an image file (.BMP, .JPG, .GIF, .PNG, etc.) or a zip file of several images, as opposed to a Word document containing the screen shots. Because Word documents are prone to viruses, many message board users will not open your Word file, therefore limiting their ability to help you.

Similarly, if you are uploading a zipped archive, you should simply create a .ZIP file and not a self-extracting .EXE as many users will not run your EXE file.

Checkbox in a browse - watch out

This one is aimed mainly at newbies (like me), so I apologise to the rest of you for preaching to the converted.

I recently had a problem with a checkbox in a browse that was simple to solve, but took me half an hour to track down.

I had a logical field for which I had set the field rules to find the value in a simple drop-down (T or F). When I created the browse I decided that it would be more elegant to have a checkbox. I change the property in the browse to 'display as checkbox' and all appeared OK. However, the checkbox could only change the value from True to False, not the other way round. After much searching/experimenting/cursing (delete as applicable) I changed the field rule to 'No lookup'...... Voila! All was fine.
If computers are so clever how come someone as dumb as me has to tell them what to do?

    Hi Paul,

I think the lesson you learned was that you dont make a logical field a lookup if it going to be used as a checkbox.

I also have a browse in which I use checkboxes, and I was wondering if there is a way to automatically save my change when the checkbox is clicked without having to move to another record, or press F9?

I don't believe so. Alpha doesn't know you are done with your change until you move to another field or record.

          Hi Stan,

Can't an OnChange event work here?

I don't believe the onchange will fire until the change is complete. Consider a text field for example. The onchange doesn't fire every time you type in a character. I believe the onchange fires when you depart the field and contents of the field have changed.

In a logical field represented by a checkbox you should be able to check/uncheck the box any number of times without the onchange firing.

Just thinking out loud. Not at liberty to test it at the moment.

              Hi Stan,

You are correct. The OnRowChange does not fire until you leave the row or save the record.

I was mixing up with the OnChange event on a form when a checkbox can fire when checked and the record has not been saved.

Try the checkbox on Alphasports Invoice and make it open Customer Info form.

Re: Checkbox in a browse - watch out

Since we're talking about checkbox behaviour...

I've got an embeded browse on a form. The browse has a checkbox. When I click into the browse, on the checkbox, the checkbox reacts - it changes from true to false or false to true.

However, while I'm still in the browse, if I click on another row, on the checkbox, the checkbox does not react. The row get focus, but I have to click again in the checkbox to change it's value.

How you seen this before? Is this normal? Doesn't seem so.
